Re: Britbase Updates
I played for Croydon against a West London team including Captain Beamish some time in 1945 (probably autumn). I vaguely remember looking at his game and thinking, yes, he does have a military air. My opponent was Dr SP Schotz, on or around Board 15, so the Captain and I may have been quite close. I...

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open
The round 7 draw just up is headed by Willow v Tiviakov. Fernandez, who shares the lead with them. is shown unpaired and with a zero. Can anybody tell this hack with a deadline to catch what that's all about?

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open
Curiously the same K+B+N v K ending occurred in Round 3 in the game Lazarus v Saine. Black won.

Re: Sir George Alan Thomas
Great to hear about the coming bio on Thomas! Anybody here that also have a clue if he had something against C.O.H´D Alexander, not giving him a single point before Saltsjöbaden 1948? I knew them both and never heard or saw any evidence of mutual antipathy. Probably just Thomas believing that he sh...

Re: Is This Arbiter's Interpretation of the Laws Correct?
An opponent taking one of his own pieces actually happened to me in England v Italy in the 1960 Clare Benedict tournament.

I can still recall the sense of shock when my opponent suddenly leaned over and grabbed my c8 bishop.

Re: Sir George Alan Thomas
Sad that there will, probably, be no bio on, Sir George Thomas. I received a message from Jon Manley in October 2023 saying that he had been invited to co-write a book on Thomas (he didn't say who the other author(s) are/were). He had been touch with Paige, who had nothing further to add, and had a...

The Chartres matches are no longer mentioned at https://ratings.fide.com/rated_tourname ... ountry=FRA, although Rouen along with completed December events are listed for rating in the January list.

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
It's listed for rating on January 1, as far as I could see, but the Chartres event has been deleted, suggesting that Firo may need 7/7 at Rouen and to meet and defeat all three 2400+ players.

Re: J D Slater Trophy
I would assume that it was presented by Jim Slater in the middle to late 1960s when he was a keen member of BH Wood's Postal Chess Club and had half a page including a photo of CHESS devoted to his business career and chess ambitions. The PCC had an inter-club league. I recall around that time Jim a...

Re: 2024 Candidates qualification revised process
There are strong rumours that India will organise a tournament in mid-December to boost Gukesh's chances of the circuit place, following the precedent set by Ding in 2021. India is already providing sizeable funds to assist Vidit, Pragg and Vaishali with their Candidates preparation, so the rumours ...
