Re: Remembering BH Wood MSc FCS OBE (13-vii-1909 04-iv-1989)

I can't vouch for later years, but the first or second Whitby Festival in 1955, in which I played, was certainly organised by CHESS and had a big report in the folowing issue of the magazine. The first CHESS festival was in Cheltenham 1953 (I played there, too) but then it moved north.

Re: European Online Chess Club Cup 2021

I didn't see it mentioned in the reports above but Gawain Jones won board 4 silver and David Howell board 2 bronze. Where is that information to be found? Later: found it now on Europe Echecs, but nothing on official ECU website or anywhere else. Very late info, but I'll do my best to have it added...

Re: Cheating in chess

Leonard, I enjoyed your Guardian piece as always, but one correction - the decision was not made by the Fair Play Commission, which is a general body within FIDE one of whose functions, as I said above, is to recommend bans for players whom they consider to their comfortable satisfaction to have be...

Re: Cheating in chess

this either means being seen regularly glancing furtively offscreen on the camera which players are required to have on them, Another detail that might have raised suspicion was that she had looked away from her screen a few times during games, for which she has an explanation: the limited vision o...

Re: T Van Scheltinga vs A Alekhine

Buenos AIres 1939 , page 47 I don't know what that third source is; it is not listed in the Betts bibliography of chess works in English so perhaps it was an Argentinian book or bulletin? Decades ago when I had a chess library I had a copy of the book of Buenos Aires 1939. I think it was in Spanish...

Re: European Online Chess Club Cup 2021

More like smart thinking by Gawain, who as a very experienced blitz player surely knows all the tricks. With Bd7 v Ph4 and the square h3 unguarded Sasikiran played Bd7-c8?? as a premove, allowing 1... h3 2 Bc8 (premove) h2. Easily missed. It's just an online variant of the old postal trick where Bla...

Re: GM tv performances in the 90s and a documentary from the 80s
