Re: Batumi Olympiad

It's been pointed out on Twitter that board 35 sees IBCA take on ICCD - has that pairing come up many times before? I'm also genuinely interested to know how it works logistically as presumably announcing moves wouldn't work particularly well? Martin Lewis is playing do ICCD - and what a tournament...

Re: New Berkshire Prospect

"Perhaps it is time to consider moving to weekends. But, will venues cost more? Will availability reduce? (If you are working Mon-Fri then tell your family you are out all Saturday playing chess, that will probably be less popular than just going missing for 3 hours Monday evening!) In Germany you ...

Re: Stan Cranmer

Very sad news indeed.
I haven't played Stan but I have tracked his games on the BCCA & ICCF website where we both play correspondence chess.
My deepest condolences to his family!

Re: New Berkshire Prospect

As Roger says, there's a lot of chess at weekends in England now; in the geographically bigger counties like Yorkshire and Cumbria league chess at the weekend makes a lot of sense When I moved to England (Somerset to be more specific) I was quite "shocked" to se that the league matches are played d...

Re: Lightning Chess

I do remember that the Downend chess club in Bristol holds a 10 sec per move tournament. I usually travelled from Taunton up to Bristol which was a nice evening of fun, laughter and just silly chess. They usually had their tournament between Christmas and New year and the prizes were some "unwanted"...

Re: Viktor Kupreichik

Viktor was a team mate of mine for the last 20 years for my German team - Plettenberg. A great chess player famous for his attacking style. I do remember he was talking us through one of his best attacking games in one of the training sessions we had with him in the late 1990's - great stuff: http:/...

Re: Division Four South 2016-17

yes, we had.
After a hectic week before the final weekend we eventually had a enough players to get to two different venues.
Both teams were doing well this season - down to carefully selection players from the South West & Wales.

Re: Division Four South 2016-17

Do we actually know how many go up from Division 4?
Is it currently 2 teams only or is this likely to change?

Re: Division Two 2016-17

Apologies in advance for the inevitable rehashing of pool vs. all play all league structure debate that will likely follow, but the precarious situation of The ADs in pool A is interesting, since they have beaten most of the 'good teams' and lost to the 'bad teams'. In Round 7 they play Downend & F...

Re: Division Two 2016-17

...which, of course, is absurd. So why does it happen? Is it because someone routinely follows a formula rather than good judgement? The Pool system depends for its integrity on a fair balance between groups. Where that is so obviously skewed, as here, it disturbs the sporting contest. A bit of giv...

Re: Division Two 2016-17

It does look like group B is stronger than the other. 4 out of the top 5 seeds reside there including Alba who fielded a team with an average rating of 2312. I'm sure Guildford 3 will get stronger through the season too. That was my impression as well. I am glad that my team "West is Best" is in gr...

Re: WC Match 2016 - New York 10-30 November

I agree whilst activating your account watching the football and mobile. I am watching Germany on the iPad (0-6 against San Marino with Gnabry on a hat-trick) I was surprised that the account gets de-activated when updating some basic information!!! Obviously all good and thanks for the speedy serv...
