Re: Why is chess compared to tennis?
Haven't read the Chessbase article, but I do think Tennis and Chess are comparable. John Mcenroe during his Wimbledon commentary spent 5 minutes discussing the similarities with Chess. In both sports you have to out maneuvre your opponent in some respects. The serve in tennis is like having White in...

Re: British Championships Chess Coaching
I would advise Sabrina to do her coaching at the analysis room, and see what happens. Frankly the analysis room IS A PLACE OF COACHING BY DEFINITION, and every Tom Dick and Harry often passes over a random board and suggests possible variations to play. I highly doubt that Tom Dick or Harry are CRB ...

Re: British Championships Chess Coaching
err I don't think it's correct to ban people being coached in the analysis room. Surely "analysis " is a form of coaching in itself?- Therefore activities in that room are by definition coaching. Anyway I'll repeat my post above: "Good grief stop arguing you lot, you sound like a bunch of old women(...

Re: British Championships Chess Coaching
Good grief stop arguing you lot, you sound like a bunch of old women(*awaits the jobsworth who takes offence*). Haven't you got anything better to do with your precious lives than to attack people behind a computer screen? Alot of you are probably incapable of being able to articulate yourselfs as y...

Duncan Edwards
Those of you may not have neard of Duncan Edwards, but you should have. He died because of the 1958 Munich Air Crash. It seems to me that if Duncan Edwards had survived, Manchester United would have won more league championships and European Cups. Not only this, had he survived, England would have w...

I don't think the critics were being overly critical, again it seems Chess people are overly pedantic and therefore even slight misinterpretations of language can lead to people being unfairly rebuked.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:*sigh*

Re: Chess families
Talking of family members facing each other over the chess board, I remember a TV clip about the Bryan brothers (tennis) that said that they took turns in defaulting their matches with each other (in the singles) to avoid family disharmony. More famously, you have the excruciating spectacle of the ...

Gary and Phil would have been playing Cricket for Lancashire as professionals had they not chosen Football. Their Dad Neville Neville also playe...

Re: News of the World
Sadly I think the tabloids will survive. The British public are hypocrites, they'll still want to read tittle tattle about celebs and gossip. Buy a broadsheet newspaper instead.

Re: National Girls' Chess Championships - Success.
Parents happily (well most of the time) leave their child at School for 6.5 hours per week day, so it shouldn't be so much of an issue for a parent to leave their daughter for an hour or so in a coaching room. Also, if it was advertised as a female event, there shouldn't be a problem with asking the...

Re: Would you enter a tournament with no money prizes? Poll
I think there is a market for both types. It's important to have financial prizes because it's important for the masters who play chess full time. Trophies do add to the event because they're something to keep the event memorable and you can show guests or your grandchildren what you achieved.

Re: Congratulations to Prince William and Princess Catherine
I myself am OK with having the Royal Family, it does add something to our image. I agree with Alan's reasons above too. No one can deny the excellent work the Queen herself has done over the years, she is a remarkable woman. Don't forget she sees the Prime Minister each week, where she must be of so...

Re: Etiquette of resigning
I played a Blitz game tonight that was drawn, even though I was K+plenty v K down. He played pawn to a1, and pressed his clock without replacing it with a queen, which was an illegal move. I thus drew the game, because he'd completed an illegal move, but I had no means of winning the game by any se...

The professions of chess players
As a mere outsider to the game, I wonder what professions would suit strong ECF 180+ chess players? The skills of a good chess player seem to be: 1) Problem solving 2) Forward thinking 3) dealing with time pressure Doctor? Solicitor? Teacher? Banker? (Mcshane) Binman? Engineer? Lecturer? Librarian? ...
