Re: Road to Grandmaster
Will needs to do is talk to a certain J Hawkins another north east player who has gone from 130ish grade to our latest IM. He would probably be able to give him some ideas what he needs to do. The Hawk has shown what can be achieved. How many of you on here would have given J hawkins a cat in hells...

Re: Road to Grandmaster
This thread is rather tragic. He's being written off at the grand old age of 21. He's not being written off, it's just that most of us appreciate how strong Grandmaster level is. If he got rid of the girlfriend, perhaps he'd have a chance. By the way, I'd appreciate it if someone who understands Pa...

Road to Grandmaster
This item has just appeared on ChessBase Road to Grandmaster 08.10.2010 – Can a 21-year-old Class A player become a grandmaster on command? Will Taylor of Bridgwater, UK, rated around 1900, believes he can. The English bookmakers William Hill believe he can't and offered odds of 25:1 against it ha...

Re: 39th Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk 2010 (the chess)
Jones' position just looks so easy for White to play. If White ever gets Nf5 in, it's all over! Edit: A glimmer of a hope after 23. fxg4. At least that's one less open file to worry about. 23 Bh6 looked completely crushing. 23.fxg4 looks suspect to me. 23.f4 keeping the g-file 'open', or 23.Bh6 as ...

Re: 39th Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk 2010 (the chess)
Lets hope Gawain has been taking lessons from Chris Ward in this position Unfortunately it's a line that Ward neither plays, nor advocates in his books :( I'm really surprised at the amount of time both players are consuming, considering this is still (well?) within the bounds of theory. Hopefully ...

Re: 39th Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk 2010 (the chess)
So, does anyone have a clue what's going on in Gawain's dragon or it is just chaotic? Also looks like Smeets is playing the Short system against Short. Not sure what the latest theory is on this position (after 17...Re8) but Kasparov doesn't like black's chances too much. In his 'Revolution in the ...

Re: 39th Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk 2010 (the chess)
Is 18...Rxf2 an option in Howell's game? 19.Nxf2 Nxg3 20.Qg4 Bxf2+ and Nxh1 or something similar - looks scary to me
without an engine
Ok, apparently not 18...Rf7 played.

Re: 39th Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk 2010 (the chess)
What do your engines say to 21 Qh6 Rg8 - forced - 22 Rf4 threat Qh7? I can't see anything. Just ...Qf8 defends that I think?! The queen can block on h6 if white sacs. I'm more worried about a slower or trickier version of the same tactics, e.g. Rf5 with the idea of e5, then Qh6 (when Rh5 becomes po...

Re: A new twist on mobile Phones.
I play golf and the rules are easy, play the ball as it lies. Easy. But in a recent US major Open golf event a player was told at the end of the final round that he was not joint winner as he had grounded his putter in a bunker (which did not look like a bunker) and therefore lost large amounts of ...

Yes it's the same player, and last year (at a guess) for the name change? I'll try to check it out for you.
