EDIT: very nice.
Indeed. I got as far as the crucial promotion, at which point I thought that surely a Knight promotion is the only way to win, with a Bishop only drawing. But in fact the reverse is true.

Re: Under promotion to a bishop.

There was a study in CHESS magazine some time ago which featured 3 or 4 promotions to a bishop. But don't ask me which issue!

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

"The present method of calculating grades was devised to handle batch processing of results, with each batch containing a significant number of results for each active player. This method of calculation is statistically unsound once the frequency of calculation is such that the number of results in...

Re: Ignorance is Bliss

No group should feel above having the micky taken out of them, and some of what was said was actually quite amusing. But my main objection is the fact that it is the only "coverage" of the match which the BBC saw fit to show.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

our current top lot of players have become deskilled in the art of clock management because we do not want the poor wee souls losing on time. If you don't use increments then sooner or later someone will lose on time, no matter how good the players are at "clock management". Chess should be decided...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

I like Seirawan's suggestion of a 17 game match, with the challenger getting an extra White, and the champion retaining the title if the match is tied.

Re: Arbitration question

Today I was running a youth weekender. A girl had a lost game against a boy who was a queen and a rook ahead. She claimed he removed his finger freom the Rook, but the boy said he removed his finger just when she anounced stalemate, and only then pressed the clock button. I said since the arbiter w...

Re: Cheating in chess

So if a result needs to be changed after submission (nothing to do with cheating), you have to ask your grader to resubmit the entire file? That wasn't necessary in the good old days. You contacted Richard Haddrell and explained the circumstances, and he amended the result for you. I don't see why ...

The ages of all juniors with a current ECF grade can still be found in Column D of the Excel file at www.ecfgrading.org.uk/files/201808.csv
The correct link is http://www.ecfgrading.org.uk/files/grades201808.csv

Re: Is a mutual flag fall a draw?

"Valid claim" is not defined, I would have said that to be valid, you must stop the clock with one flag down and the other standing. If it's a digital clock running on increment, it will usually have frozen in that state anyway. Otherwise the both flags down = draw comes into effect. That may be co...

Re: Is a mutual flag fall a draw?

FIDE rules state - 6.8 A flag is considered to have fallen when the arbiter observes the fact or when either player has made a valid claim to that effect. No distinction between analogue or digital clocks, or whether the player has the move or not. So if both flags have fallen then presumably the fi...

Re: ECF Membership List Format changes

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, but thanks for drawing my attention to the fact that the spreadsheet still exists! - I had thought it had been discontinued.

If anyone else is looking for it, it is under 'Detailed Membership Documents' on the ECF website.

If only real service is grading then those that play most pay most. My view.

At first glance, this (from today's Dominion Post) looks like another chess cartoon drawn by someone ignorant of the rules ....
