Re: Chess is not a sport but a game. So what’s the difference?

USA, Canada or Australia are not in EU. Chess is the sport in Slovakia. It could be a language thing. Maybe the word "Sport" in Slovakia has a slightly different meaning than in English, which would allow it to encompass chess without anyone raising an eyebrow. But for many people in English speaki...

Re: Tournament Structures

Yes it would mean that (most) players wouldn't know in advance whether they were going to be in the top, middle or bottom of a section (and thus to be able to reliably assess their chance of winning a prize) but I think this is a good thing. I appreciate it would be unpopular with those seeking a r...

Generally speaking that doesn't happen, no.
Though I remember a thread on this forum some time ago in which it was suggested that it should!

This happened just across the road from where I live. I remember hearing about it at the time but hadn't realised chess was involved.

I think he was about 190 from memory, so perhaps not what we normally think of as a professional. Professional in the sense that he launched a magazine that folded after a couple of issues and wrote a book or books for Batsford (on Tal). https://chessbookchats.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/international-c...

Re: Lightning Chess

The main irritant was players stealing seconds by not moving promptly. It can also cause problems when players move too quickly, i.e. before the buzzer. Back in the 1970s whilst living in Bradford, I was playing in a lightning tournament, and one opponent was one of the many Eastern Europeans that ...
