Re: Arbitration question

Today I was running a youth weekender. A girl had a lost game against a boy who was a queen and a rook ahead. She claimed he removed his finger freom the Rook, but the boy said he removed his finger just when she anounced stalemate, and only then pressed the clock button. I said since the arbiter w...

Re: Cheating in chess

So if a result needs to be changed after submission (nothing to do with cheating), you have to ask your grader to resubmit the entire file? That wasn't necessary in the good old days. You contacted Richard Haddrell and explained the circumstances, and he amended the result for you. I don't see why ...

The ages of all juniors with a current ECF grade can still be found in Column D of the Excel file at www.ecfgrading.org.uk/files/201808.csv
The correct link is http://www.ecfgrading.org.uk/files/grades201808.csv

Re: Is a mutual flag fall a draw?

"Valid claim" is not defined, I would have said that to be valid, you must stop the clock with one flag down and the other standing. If it's a digital clock running on increment, it will usually have frozen in that state anyway. Otherwise the both flags down = draw comes into effect. That may be co...

Re: Is a mutual flag fall a draw?

FIDE rules state - 6.8 A flag is considered to have fallen when the arbiter observes the fact or when either player has made a valid claim to that effect. No distinction between analogue or digital clocks, or whether the player has the move or not. So if both flags have fallen then presumably the fi...

Re: ECF Membership List Format changes

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, but thanks for drawing my attention to the fact that the spreadsheet still exists! - I had thought it had been discontinued.

If anyone else is looking for it, it is under 'Detailed Membership Documents' on the ECF website.

If only real service is grading then those that play most pay most. My view.
How would you propose to implement that?

At first glance, this (from today's Dominion Post) looks like another chess cartoon drawn by someone ignorant of the rules ....
Or maybe it's the player who is ignorant of the rules!

Looks like the live feed has stalled, which is a pity - I was enjoying Howell vs Basman!

https://www.englishchess.org.uk/the-2018-english-womens-championships/ Hopefully in the actual event the boards will be the right way round! That link doesn't work any more. They've now replaced it with another, which has a picture with a very unusual board! - https://www.englishchess.org.uk/watch-...

Re: ECF membership discounts

I'm not too bothered about the discount, but what I would like to know is how (or whether) I can renew my club members' memberships en bloc, as used to be possible with the old system. So far an email enquiry plus a query raised via the azolve website have failed to produce any response. It appears...

A couple of years ago a club in our league had to move at short notice because their landlord hadn't paid the electricity bill, so the power was cut off.

Re: British Championship 2018

A good news and bad news sort of post. Shreyas Royal (on FB) on his Major Open experience: "If you have a passion and courage then nothing else matters ,you will be successful ! It was my last British Chess Championship and I’m happy with my excellent performance gained 149 Elo’s ( 2115) which beco...
