Re: The English Language

The quality of piece placement almost certainly mattered before but, for reasons unkown to us here, it matters much more now.

Re: The English Language

In general here is a difference - To 'have' something means you have now got (obtained) it. To 'hold' something means you've got (obtained) it and are keeping (retaining) it. E.g. in the traditional form of the marriage vows there is - ... to have and to hold from this day forward... However, some c...

Re: Surrey Chess Congress October 26-28

Therefore Guernsey already "clashed" with Scarborough before Surrey (Kingston) appeared.

Don't the distances between those three locations make a "clash" a remote possibility that only inveterate chess tourists would encounter?

Re: London chess classic

Thanks for that prompt reply and the correction, Nick, which I humbly accept as being a true statement of the facts. All games counting for rating makes it even more likely that Nick Grey would have probably had more chance of a higher initial rating in the April event than in the August one since t...

Re: London chess classic

I'll try to fill the gap between Nick Grey's and Nick Faulks' comments - I played in the same CCF "Get me a rating" tournament, held in Aug.-Sep. 2007, as Nick G. Nick was unrated - but was the highest graded player at 156A (1800-1850 approx?) and scored 8/11 (+7,=2,-2) and got an initial rating of ...

Re: The Messina Chess Club

Note that in the link provided by David R it says the tsunami was "up to 12 m (39')..." That's 12 meters (39 feet).

The Prof mixed the metric up with his imperial - a detail even lofty NASA scientists have fallen foul of.

Re: Wei Yi-Inarkiev match

Thanks for the link, Chris, in which a slightly different setup is given to the one you described. ...It was one of these fairly-common-these-days matches between a Chinese player and an invited grandmaster. In this case the Chinese prodigy was the one who was invited - to Magas the capital of the R...

Re: Is it copyright infringement?

You know how it should go - first get the copyright holder's permission to translate, print and sell your translation in Iran. You also know how difficult it is to agree such a contract with the copyright holder to cover the publishing, in Iran, of translations of English language chess books. It ma...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

... SNIP I suppose there's also whether the ECF should or could attempt to use Agon's World Championship match in London in some promotional manner. I recently read, in the Evening Standard (so it could be true), that Agon were moving their operation from Moscow to London in advance of the 2018 Wor...
