Re: Is this a win?

So although White has the right to claim a win - should he claim a win? Black had a draw in hand and only needed to offer. The fact that he chose not to, and play for an unlikely win should be penalised if the gamble fails. Otherwise you may as well make a rule that says a player in a winning posit...

Not like you can blame them for that!

Re: NCCU website down

Sure he's fine. Anyhow, the Lancs - Yorkshire stage matches are nigh on 'friendlies' (hahahahha!), so no one will care too obsessively about strict qualification rules.

Re: NCCU website down

That open match was much stronger than the past year or two. A bit frightening!

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

The other claim is that people simply find it fun to see their grade move about on a regular basis, so might play more or something. Baffles me but maybes there's an effect :)

Re: Grading Database offline?

The ECF league management system is in a very similar state, so presumably related. Sure it'll be fixed soon :)

Re: State of Chess: How much money is in the sport?

The economics of bridge are quite simple: the Professionals are paid to partner/play on teams of 4/6 by private sponsors. Like how say Guildford I think in the 4NCL run, except that in bridge the sponsors tend to insist on playing. (Its much easier to 'hide' one reasonably competent but lower standa...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

Yorkshire chess is very metropolitan! The sheep up in the Dales and the grouse on the NYM don't play much :)
(Its very much Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, York, Hull and the various smaller towns in those areas.).

However, it's one sport which above any other epitomizes the concept that it's the taking part that is most important. A good day out on the fells is in itself a prize beyond measure.
Very true indeed :) More very long walking here but very similar reasons!

Re: State of Chess: How much money is in the sport?

I think most of the people in stuff like the Marathon des Sables find it fun :) I don't think Jasmin Paris got anything for winning the Spine race in January. (Money that is, she definitely made a few points!). Never really much money in fell running either coming or going. Quite a few newer not qui...

Probably an accident with them instead updating the tables on the results and pairings page? Nice to have them all in one place like that though :)

Re: Div 3 North 2018-19

WR2 favourites yes, especially now WR1 presumably going to be fairly strong for the final weekends. Shropshire still only marginally so - they're a good team but it won't be easy for them vs various others. Like MM2. Bob was on board 6? Goodness :) Jorvik snuck out with a pair of 3.5-2.5 wins. We ca...

Re: Division One 2018-19

3C's not all home grown for a change either mind - and a very solid looking line up as a result. That's definitely been a dangerous weekend for Manx, passed through nicely. The bigger question maybe whether they're going to reinforce even further when it gets really serious. The theoretical ability ...
