Re: Don't Understand Grading Calculation

Something like that, yes :)

Obviously this is fundamentally a daft argument given we all agree that you're essentially guessing, but a priori I do think that opposition strength should be marginally useful information. I suppose possible to check in theory.

Re: Don't Understand Grading Calculation

Let's apply your logic from the other direction. A player walks into your club and claims to be from a country you were sure was still part of Russia. You put him on board 5 in Division 3, and he easily beats a couple of children graded 38 and 49. Do you therefore let him enter the Under 100 sectio...

Re: Don't Understand Grading Calculation

Hummm, I'm not sure you know. I think team captains tend to have a decent idea how strong players are, and that determines the strength of the field they play to a fair extent. Also people entering the 'right' part of Open tournaments. Seems like information to me. Weak, but information. Not got any...

Re: Div 3 North 2019-20

Bradford A really weren't that strong in Div2 last year, although likely to be a little stronger back on home ground.

We'll find out :) No idea who'll get promotion. I'm not sure if there's even one team who you'd say really want it this time round.

Re: Div 3 North 2019-20

Overall? Surely not - we've lost the really strong team(s) from some earlier years.

Maybe one or two more weaker ones, depending quite where everyone lands up.

Re: The Death of League Chess?

I do foresee a death of league chess as well, but more likely based on clubs bring priced out of their venues and gradually running out of people willing to do the large amount of unpaid admin work it takes to run them. Still, it is 4 years since this post was made and the league deaths are not hap...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

Good luck coping with reassinging the date, geographic area etc of an incorrectly entered tournament once its stuck on an immutable chain :) The weighting thing isn't easy. Cutting it to 30 games is slightly silly when some people are playing 50+ games a year - they're all data. The time based cut o...

Its something to do with them not wanting to set a legal maximum because of glass foundry workers and stuff.

Which is a pretty feeble excuse but anyway :)

Re: Piece values

They're doing high level interpretations of the results, which are obviously rather useful! All you can do anyway :) There's absolutely no way to go back and work what internal representations Alpha Zero has created to use for things like piece values, king safety etc. That's just how neural nets ar...

That was clever :) Well done Harrogate.

Fairly sure its the first time Forgrove have been relegated in their existence. They'll very likely come straight back up again of course.

Re: Div 3 North 2018-19

Looks like MM1 came up a bit short vs their strongest potential teams. Plenty of depth in the squad but not that much of it is 2200+.

I guess you can always relegate many of the bottom boards from MM1 to MM2 and move the MM2 ones up :)

Jorvik flying amusingly high in the end.
