Re: ECF Agm 2017
Despite the defensive nature of my recent posts, I was simply replying to the ludicrous nature of Brian Tower's suggestion that there was dodginess about our friendly, good natured tournament. I don't recall anyone making complaints on the day. But there's obviously some people who can't be pleased....

Re: ECF Agm 2017
Paul, it was announced beforehand that the pairings were going to be changed where local players were paired together (so in the first round I wasn't surprised to be paired against somebody with a very similar grade to myself) and one local player was given 3 cash prizes! Normal practice is maximum...

Re: ECF Agm 2017
In Durham it is mainly rapid tournaments. Earlier in the year there was a rather dodgy rapid in Thornaby where it was announced beforehand that the "arbiter" would be fiddling the pairings in favour of local players. Less controversially there is a rapid team tournament called the "Ron Evers" - htt...

Re: English Chess Forum player of the year: The Poll
Voted for Keith Arkell, Jonathan Hawkins, David Howell and Brendan O'Gorman. Keith - fantastic ambassador for English Chess and still going strong after all these years! The Hawk due to a meteoric rise without any support the ECF. David Howell in getting ever so close to the 2700 mark. Brendan O'Gor...

Re: The Death of League Chess?
Yes, I did think Newcastle (and above) was doing all right :) The Durham/Cleveland leagues are in considerably more worrying health but it really has been an all round horrible few decades for 'Boro/some of the ex mining places in Durham :( Leeds chess is actually a bit of a special case. The origi...

Re: The Cinderella man of chess
Well done Keith - you're an inspiration to me. I've got your book but would love you to write/publish one on your favourite endings from your own games with a littering of maybe your peers, such as Ulf Andersson.
Good luck with your future - the way you're going presently, you don't need much!!

Chess books/dvds for sale
Hello all, I need space and am looking to sell the majority of my chess book/DVD collection. I'm interesting in selling in bulk, due to some unforeseen changes in my life. I'm not giving up chess and very much looking forward to the new season ahead! Anyone interested, or has any contacts for sellin...

Re: Media comments on chess
Which bit of 'steal cars, chase and gun down thieves' do you think is inaccurate? It's a video game, not a catechism. Shouldn't we be celebrating the fact that The Times led with chess in an editorial rather than accusing it of 'sanctimonious pomposity'? Not especially, no. I think we ought to look...

Re: We're goin' to Vegas!!!
In my first year of playing, I'm pretty sure I had a sandbagger throw a game to me in the last round of a congress, neither of us were on for any prize money. I had black and said player seemed to play very passively the whole game (and it would have had to be very passively, I was a 90 grade and d...

It's just another post from Justin Horton criticising an organisation he's never been an officer of.

Robert Richmond has written a book on the Nottingham International Tournament of 1936, one of the strongest events ever, judged by the top players involved. Re: Sean Hewitt resigns
What it needs less of is people chuntering from the sidelines while not contributing an awful lot themselves. Two things overwhelmed me today. The first was the number of pleasant comments and e-mails about the National Club, and also general e-mails from other people who read the e-mail. I think i...

I hope the wait is worth it.Matt Mackenzie wrote:It seems the "relaunch" date has been put back to June now.
This is one of my favourite chess portals and hope the guest writers are kept as their content was top notch.
Let's hope the substance is still there and not just a glossy overhaul without the content.
