Re: 21st Century Chess, in 21st Century Facilities!

It has been a while since I posted on this topic, which I am sure you will understand is as a result of COVID delaying our project.

Anyway, our plans are progressing and we have great hopes of opening the doors of the Chess Centre later this year.

More details to follow in due course.........

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Great to hear about the Chess Cafe in Malta.

Further updates to come in the coming weeks in relation to a similar venture much closer to home.....

Re: Late-starting chess players with grandmaster potential?

[quote="Andrew Wainwright" post_id=256132 time=1605808400 user_id=717] That said, there are many gifted players out there (such as Matt) who don't have the Titles, and decided that other priorities in life took priority. You are doing your friend a disservice Andrew! I ...

Re: Late-starting chess players with grandmaster potential?

Another one is Matthew Webb but stopped playing past few years I think. He went from 94 in 2000 to 178 in 2010 and 192 in January 2014 but then 247 in 2018 Year of birth 1986. so first played graded chess at age of 13 or14 but didn't get really good until well into his mid to late twenties and earl...

Re: Ian Thackray

Ian was a great guy, someone I always enjoyed seeing at league matches, congresses and other chess events. As Ihor says, he was a really friendly guy, great fun to be around and always took the time to have a chat. He will be sadly missed by the Bradford, Leeds, Yorkshire and wider chess community.

Likewise, sorry to hear this sad news, another big lose to the Yorkshire Chess community.

Re: John Brooke

I learnt today that John Brooke passed away recently. John represented several clubs within Yorkshire over the years; Bradford, Rose Forgrove, Ilkley, Calderdale and Harrogate (my club). He was also a regular on the congress circuit and had many interests within chess. He was captain of the Yorkshi...

Re: Winston Williams

Mick - That game from the first season of 4NCL North is one of my stand out memories of Winston. When he took of his trainers and put those blue carrier bags on his feet - classic! He was a lovely quirky man who will be sadly missed by the Bradford chess community.

It would be something. (It would also be something pretty expensive to build and run, which is the main reason such a thing doesn't already exist.)
Doesn't exist yet.........

Re: 21st Century Chess, in 21st Century Facilities!

Imagine, a venue that is solely dedicated to promoting Chess at all levels, based outside of London. A true centre of Chess excellence, where a Chess community can come together to enjoy their love of the game. No more dingy upstairs rooms/basements in a pub or social club, hidden away from the wor...

Re: NCCU and the MCF

Quite right Andrew Zigmond, the YCA is in support of the MCF joining the NCCU and I look forward to receiving a report from the YCA officials who attended the NCCU meeting to understand what they said and did in support the MCF's application at the last NCCU meeting. Mick - I truely hope that this w...

Re: Quarter-Finals

Michael - To be honest I didn't struggle for players at all and pretty much everyone I asked jumped at the chance. I could easily have filled 16 boards in each team if needed (we played each match over 12 boards). I know a lot of players in Yorks having run teams and competitions for about 10yrs so...

Re: Quarter-Finals

Is that not entirely the point, we shouldn't have to force "reluctant" captains to take things on because no one else will. Yorkshire chess (and from my experience chess in general) lacks compitent and committed individuals willing to put in the work to to run teams, leagues, competitions etc. Relyi...

Re: Quarter-Finals

Mike - no doubt you will remember that I launched the two Bradford DCA teams in the 4NCL north in its maiden season. I loved the competition and was extremely happy in our first season when Bradford A won Div 3. When my second child came along I had to take a step back and left the teams in a very h...
