Re: Dave Rumens
Not one of my good days (played in 1985). The other time I played him was even worse - he was an excellent player and interesting character. Howard Williams memorably said to Rumens at one Civil Service League match, "Is your qualification for DHSS as an employee or a claimant?" That was a very fai...

Re: Dave Rumens
Very sad news, I had the pleasure of playing on the same team as Dave for the DHSS. As well as being a very strong player he was also a very nice guy. As mentioned above his eligibility to play for the DHSS was somewhat dubious but as team captain for DHSS1 I was always pleased when he was available...

Re: An Open Letter to CJ De Mooi
Hi Chris. I have never ever seen an argument like this resolved in a public forum. They simply wimper out or descend into a complete fun filled farce. I'm sure 'coming out' was the last thing Alex wanted. He knows these forums are haunted by a handful of nutters, fools and idiots. (I'm in there som...

Re: An Open Letter to CJ De Mooi
To be honest this thread has been bombarded with so many posts which have now been moved but along with some relevant posts it is almost impossible to follow. As I posted earlier, though I am now pretty certain it was the case, it seems some people were happy to hijack this thread and thereby take i...

Re: An Open Letter to CJ De Mooi
Just like to say well done to Ernie for his posts. Adding three points :- 1) It’s pretty depressing to realise that, (given the pre-presentation tweet, and the huge over-reaction), wearing ‘the t-shirt’ was more important to our ECF President than presenting the British Chess Champions with p...

Re: An Open Letter to CJ De Mooi
. Summed up for me at least as "thread closed due to lack of integrity ". Those people who take the view that anyone who has a problem with CJ should stay publicly silent while the ECF resolves everything ( by doing nothing? ) would like nothing better than the termination of this and similar threa...

Re: A Chess paradox
As a junior I was always puzzled by a check given by a pinned piece, for example a rook giving check but itself pinned by a queen. Was it really check, as the rook cannot move? I rationalised it to myself as follows: capture of the king ends the game! So the notional RxK comes before the even more ...

Re: An Open Letter to CJ De Mooi
I read somewhere in this thread that CJ had tweeted the night before saying he intended to wear the T shirt. That's a premeditated action ie he knew what he was doing, why say it if not to help publicity. It is relevant. Twitter seems to delete histories after a while, but it was certainly there. Th...

Re: An Open Letter to CJ De Mooi
After trawling through 9 pages and 126 posts am I right in thinking the conclusion is that there is no conclusion :? I have been playing chess for 40 years, I can honestly say I have never been aware of any kind of discrimination. Of course some people are racist, homophobic or otherwise prejudiced ...

Re: CJ
I am very reluctant to be critical of other people, I rarely post on here for that reason. As a general point, which may be taken as the reader wishes, I find certain members of the ECF aloof and out of touch with the ordinary chess player. For that reason I no longer belong to the ECF, that will co...

Re: BLOODY HELL
Amazingly I have just been advised that the Bridge Club evening at Watford is cancelled because the police are expecting trouble in the Town centre. What are we coming to ? Yes, I heard the rumours but I also heard a rumour that Watford was going to be targeted at 3pm today, still very quiet. Long ...

Re: Subscription concessions?
I am big enough and ugly enough to look after myself especially where cowards who hide behind a keyboard are concerned. Face to face I doubt they have much fortitude! An example of the scroungers I refer to. Last year at a northern congress a chess player who was not staying at the hotel where the ...

Re: Subscription concessions?
Just to put the record straight in view of some comments seemingly directed at myself. People in the north of England know I financially help out people and events. I have a record of paying entry fees to congress's for those who I respect and at times were finding it hard to pay entry fees to cong...
