Re: 2026 National Stages

Thank you Stephen, it’s always interesting to see the match from the opposition perspective. Well played to all at Yorkshire.
Peter Lee is still playing high level bridge as well as chess

Re: Paul Durrant

That game was from a Thames Valley Div 2 match in 2009, Harrow A v Surbiton B.

Paul’s last game was in a Thames Valley Div 1 match against Kingston where he played IM John Hawksworth

Re: 2024 National Stages

Surrey played Northumberland in both Open and U-2050 last year. Both matches were played in Newark although at different venues.

Of more concern is the clash of the final with the World Senior Teams, which will affect a substantial proportion of the Surrey players.

Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)

Chris I think Dave Metcalfe would have been the captain around that time. If you want details of the SCCU matches, can I recommend Anthony Fulton’s book The Southern Counties Chess Union - a retrospective I played for Oxfordshire through most of the 80s and into the 90s so may be able to help in ide...

Re: Home Advantage

Two close matches at Wanstead. 9-7 to Essex in the U-2050 and 8.5-7.5 to Surrey. Further to the comment by Kevin, I had 5 u-14s in my Surrey U-2050 side

Re: British Rapidplay 2024

It’s a pity that these dates couldn’t be publicised earlier. As it is they now clash with long arranged dates for county matches in both the SCCU and EACU.

Neill, the Wallingford Herald would certainly have shared the chess column with the Abingdon Herald. If I remember correctly it was the same paper apart from the cover pages

Wallingford was in Berkshire until the county boundaries were changed.
As someone who grew up in Abingdon I can remember these chess columns.
