Re: Hampshire Congress November 2019

Interesting pairings in the Minor to produce two players on 5/5 from 27 players over 5 rounds.

Re: Passive Exchange Sacrifices and Refusing to Take the Exchange

Black is the exchange up. If the knight on f1 is recaptured the percentage material advantage is increased. If white plays 2.Nxe6+ then 2..fxe6 3.Rxf1+ and the percentage material advantage is increased even more. If 2.Nxa8 then 2..Nxd2 putting black a piece up. I'd be interested to see the moves wh...

Re: ECF Arbiter Regulations

Michael, I am the newly appointed Manager of Arbiters (Home). I have had email communication regarding your situation, but not from you in person. I am concerned that you consider the ECF Official that you contacted 'showed total disinterest'. Please email me, the address is on the Arbiter List, so ...

Re: 1 1/2 points per game

The appeals committee should surely uphold the arbiter's original decision that White won on time when Black's flag fell. 6.8 A flag is considered to have fallen when the arbiter observes the fact or when either player has made a valid claim to that effect. The arbiter observed the flagfall and corr...

Re: Bristol Winter Congress Feb 20-22nd

The guaranteed £1000 prize fund applies to the whole congress - 3 sections and I am assured that it will rise if the entries warrant this. The Open section being FIDE rated and using increments is something new for a Bristol event and whilst we hope this will attract plenty of entrants we are 'testi...

Incremental time controls

Can anyone tell me if any tournament chess is played in this country, or in Europe, using the time delay or the Bronstein system? I've only ever been aware or the Fischer system being used but there are obviously digital game timers available which use the other functions. Are they of any practical ...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

I read a similarly themed short story in a collection of chess stories in the early seventies. A man presents a new opening to a chess master, the opening will force mate for white in under 20 moves. The master studies the opening using his specially designed set where the bishops are rather tall an...

Re: Diary of a new junior chess 'coach'

Hi Scott, full marks for your enthusiasm and effort. I wouldn't worry too much about the 'backpedalling' as such, rather you can view it as evidence that the player is thinking about the consequences of the move. You could introduce the 'touch move' rule and emphasise the importance of thinking with...
