Re: Has anyone ever given up chess?
Several of us have virtually given up on chess to play bridge e.g Peter Lee, Jonathan Mestel, myself and intriguingly, Jonathan Penrose, who plays at my bridge club at Welwyn.....although it is very much a pastime for him whilst Jonathan and Peter take it very seriously and do extremely well at Nat...

Re: Has anyone ever given up chess?
James Howell got the GM title and then gave up completely, not just competitive chess, but anything associated with chess. I had wondered what had happened to him. Saw him in the Romiley, Harrogate and BCF congresses in 1984. He seemed to have a very high concentration level when playing his games....

Re: Concentration.......
I think you well may be right Jon, but for completely different reasons, one would assume. a friend recalled that at a chess congress, in the early 1980s I think, so many men were circling around a game Sheila Caldwell was playing in . Sheila was wearing a low cut dress that day and my friend recko...

Re: Complicate or simplify against a weaker player?
I remember playing against a schoolboy in a rapidplay team tournament about 15 years ago. He played quite sharp and had the better of the opening. I then decided to play a positional sacrifice which would complicate things. My opponent gave a worried look and kept looking at me before getting my att...

Re: BRITISH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS - THE GAMES
What has happened to all the exciting, sacrificial games we used to witness in the times of Mestel, Speelman, Nunn etc ? Had Mestel, Speelman and Nunn (all now over 50 years old) played in the 2011 BCC, would they play exciting sacrifical games? I notice that a lot of chess players play more positi...

Re: Should the ECF accept CJs resignation? - Poll
However, in this instance we have an EDCA member, Christopher Kreuzer, who says that he might wish to attend the ECF AGM. I have known Chris for over 10 years (I have been an EDCA member since 1983) and have played matches against him (he usually wins!), so if he wants to attend the ECF meetings as...

Re: Should the ECF accept CJs resignation? - Poll
No, you can't. Only "Full Members" can attend. Just to make life difficult, that's not as in the membership class "Full member". Basically, a delegate of anyone who is listed on the voting register is entitled to attend, and that's about it. He's got a better chance than most. The English Deaf Ches...

Re: Hats at the board
I remember playing a chess match in the North Midlands League for AGD against Sutton about 20 years ago. My opponent (i think his name is Robinson) wore a hat, a white doctor coat and walked barefoot. I remember he was playing in the Derby chess congress when there was a lot of snow that weekend an...

saw Jones having a drink at the Tap (at Rail station) last night. Palliser, Wells and the Ledger brothers were there too. There is still time for Jones to get back there before the last orders!

Re: British Chess Championships 2011
I'm reliably informed that Nick turned down a draw at some point. Perhaps surprising how often people like to predict players lacking the desire to play for the win on the forum. (of course doesn't stop people still piling in with criticism once the game is over with a draw agreed!) That's interest...

Re: Top chess players body language and habits
Surely, some deeper thought at the critical moments could only improve results?! Sometimes the reverse can be true. I sometimes end up rejecting a move I would have instinctively played, because a long period of thought has convinced me that another move is better. Sometimes the extra thinking just...
