Re: Manx Championship 2020 9th to 11th October

Yep was covid free for many months, but xmas period got an outbreak. Hopefully we can eliminate it as New Zealand did with the current lockdown.

Re: Cheating in chess

Thought about things a bit more. Think there is not much point in discussions here about methods of these sites. We don't know what they do, although some might say it's reasonable to assume a few things (both good and bad mind- clearly I'm in the "good" camp). People are free to say things that mig...

Re: Cheating in chess

Regan methodology works less well in OTB chess because: 1) takes more time to get sample. 2) cheaters are forced to cheat less by practical reasons (again more sample). 3) there is a much better option! Combine Regan style analysis to alert arbiters who can ask players that are suspicious for a sear...

Re: Cheating in chess

If they don't give the same results it's not the same methodology it would be well known amongst computer chess experts that the quality of the moves is dependent on the hardware and background software and how long you give the engine to compute. One might wonder whether the time control at which ...

Re: Cheating in chess

In practice I don't know if there is enough funding in FIDE to do such a thing for OTB Nothing to do with funding, obviously nothing of this sort could be done in a rated competition and what would be proved otherwise? I think some online testing could be done. The problem is- we can only really te...

Re: Cheating in chess

the fact that methodology can't be revealed This isn't a fact, though, is it? It might be undesirable to do so, for all manner of very good reasons, but it's not a fact, and indeed without revealing the methodology there's not going to be any proper science. Sorry I just used those words for conven...

Re: Cheating in chess

I have to say that this is a good idea to get around the fact that methodology can't be revealed. In practice I don't know if there is enough funding in FIDE to do such a thing for OTB, and whether the cheated participants would be OK with this in various tournament/league games (if you inform them ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I actually agree with you that FIDE ratings are less reliable. When it comes to online rating- there's a lot more sample within a shorter time frame, making move correlation analysis have better predictability. I don't know what to prove here tbh? we can choose some thresholds with a training data s...

Re: Cheating in chess

This is by definition what this sort of evidence is. It assigns a probability that such moves can be produced by any human/Magnus Carlsen/the player in question. That's where the interpretations and assumptions come in. There's an underlying assertion that rating calculations are reliable down to t...

Re: Cheating in chess

But also conversely we know quite a bit of the care they take for high profile players. Do we? Where can we find this information? How much do we know about in any detail? Can't know for sure like everything else but all the top GM streamers say this, including Naroditsky's vod that Matthew linked....

Re: Cheating in chess

That doesn't really help because it was an anonymous account. As a titled account they would probably start you off with a much higher rating. [/quote] This makes sense. Fwiw: https://www.chess.com/member/itshafu This is Svidler's account that was used by Kasparov, and he indeed lost to some 1600-1...

Re: Cheating in chess

This is why especially for high level GMs, these sites don't ban lightly, and thoroughly review the data through human eyes. I dunno how often it will be necessary to say this, but we don't actually know precisely what the sites do, and this is especially so when it's not high level GMs. You're rig...

Re: Cheating in chess

Yeah I think it's for the legends of chess series on c24. I don't remember Leko playing on chessom. Also regarding the Mike Postle poker cheating scandal/court case, there was a graph produced (I can't verify his winrate displayed on this graph-disclaimer): https://i.imgur.com/66i3Tii.jpg Showing hi...

Fair, I don't know much about law. Chalk this up as exaggeration of "bad faith argument".
