Re: County Chess Longest Playing Player

I played for Lancs for close on 45 years. Many people have more years under their belt.

Re: 4NCL Time control

Playing in Daventry I often found myself paying a small fortune for a taxi to Rugby. It did not fill me with the milk of human kindness.

Re: Best Game by an English Player (the vote)

In fact it was the Hodgson game (which I witnessed) I was mainly thinking of.

Re: Best Game by an English Player (the vote)

I'm struggling to see the list now.

Was there anything by Mestel? If not, there should be!

I don't know exactly why but I've never found the Timman game very exciting.

Re: The Best Game of Chess played by an English Player

I reckon that the Miles wins against Spassky would have to be up there too. Also Penrose v Tal if we're going back that far.

One of my favourites is Keene v Miles. I forget where it was played; it's the one where Keene found Qb1! in an IQP position.

My guess is that every strong player prefers bishops to knights.

Vishy included.

Never had this happen to me but I share Peter's irritation.

By the way, re the above: I would say that 3. Qd1 is a bit of a joke.

White should be playing for something!

I am so glad that I do not yet show as deceased. I will however remain inactive, probably for ever.

Re: Blackpool Congress 2024

Agreed, but I'm not sure it's only that.

Could it be that prize money has not kept pace with inflation? Your average GM may not fancy the idea of having to win 5 games in order to turn a decent profit.

Re: Blackpool Congress 2024

I took a stroll round the Imperial.

This is far from being the event it used to be, full of strong players. I was amazed by how weak the Open looked.

I did however take heart from the number of promising juniors on view, in all sections.
