Re: Longueurs at tournaments

If I'm playing somewhere scenic (anything with a beach will normally do) then I'm normally glad of a bit of downtime between rounds. Even if I'm playing somewhere more mundane I can have a walk around the town and grab some lunch while I'm about it. If I'm staying locally (or on occasion in the venu...

Re: Yorkshire grading system

Should we be lamenting the end of what seems to have been a good and efficiently run operation or viewing this as the removal, not before time, of an anachronism? Probably both. The chessnuts grading site with its live grades and easy to use interface was quite groundbreaking at the time and was pr...

Re: Yorkshire grading system

The leagues have to vote to join the ECF grading structure first and are under no obligation to do so (some may simply opt to go ungraded). If they do vote to join it will be up to the individual leagues to decide how they manage players who refuse to join. If it gets `messy` it is solely a result o...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I'll throw something else into the mix. The ECF ultimately aren't responsible for the `product`. Is your club/ league welcoming and forward looking or does it just tick along amateurishly in a dingy pub function room? Give players a better incentive to come along and they'll be more willing to meet...

Re: Revised Papers

11. International Directorate: Previously, the International Director has declined to provide a breakdown of the expenditure on team events though most of it comes from ECF funds and members are surely entitled to know how the money they’ve provided is spent. (At the 2015 Finance Council meeting, t...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Adult Silver members are currently paying a total of over £16000 more than they would if they were Bronze members. I would like to know whether this represents the true additional cost of grading congresses. Though I acknowledge that this is not the only criterion by which the NCCU proposal should ...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I should perhaps just clarify that the `Is your league welcoming,` question was directed at the wider `audience` and not at you specifically. I appreciate that the embedded quote made it look otherwise and I apologise. Blaming ECF fees for declining participation is an easy get out (and I'm not sayi...

Re: Revised Papers

And another point for the current board in the `2008 vs now` debate. We've certainly come a long way from the Chess For Schools debacle. I don't think anyone is actually having that debate. Although if they were 2008 is one of the least fair years to pick for a comparison of how England juniors are...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

The NCCU have put forward a proposal to that effect, yes. Given that the NCCU is distrusted by many within the North of England, never mind outside of it, I suspect the proposal has little chance of succeeding. I have indeed heard interesting things on the matter/NCCU. However, on this particular m...

Re: Revised Papers

A further paper relating to the income and expenditure on the ECF Junior Academy has appeared on the ECF website. My view is that it should certainly be looked at by Council reps before the meeting. I'm sure many of us have wished we knew more about what the Academy does and how it spends its money...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Not everyone is a fan of the new membership structure Would I be correct to say that this upcoming Council is an opportunity for us to vote for an alternative membership structure with a Standard Membership, instead of separate Bronze and Silver? The NCCU have put forward a proposal to that effect,...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I really don't agree with any of Andrew's assessments. This is a board with very substantial influence over how Council votes. Possibly because it is a board that's generally respected by council and which treats council with respect. I'll risk a slightly controversial comment and say it's also a b...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

even those critical of the ECF surely have to admit that considerable progress has been made since. Really. Almost exactly the same points can be made today. I was thinking particularly about the comments Harriet and Andrew made about the lack of support for top players. That's in the context of th...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Is it believed that if the Board's new strategy comes under fire he will resign? There's a 10 year anniversary shortly https://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=262&hilit=resignation I'd noticed that anniversary myself, albeit for slightly different reasons. Revisiting threads from around tha...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Regardless of the merits of any given individual, the organisation is bigger than any indivdual within it and could survive the absence of any individual within it. And any organisation of which this is not true is an organisation with a very big problem. I'll need a sit down and a cup of tea after...
