Re: Team Board Orders & Grades

My rule of thumb as Yorkshire League controller has always been that if a team has a complaint about playing order it is their job to raise it and the burden of proof is on them (unless of course the violation is so obvious that it sticks out like a sore thumb - this has never happened). Following a...

Re: Team Board Orders & Grades

From my experience of the Yorkshire League, both as player and controller, it is very hard for teams to engineer or avoid specific pairings. While some long standing top boards may have what amounts to an annual encounter, changes within teams from match to match means that individual pairings are h...

Re: County Championship Consultation

I'm assuming the match above must have been a union stage match rather than a national stage match, as the latter don't start until April. The point (and it shouldn't detract from what sounds a thoroughly unpleasant experience) is that complaints would need to be taken up with the county union invol...

Re: County Championship Consultation

I don't what regional structures France and Germany have within their respective federations Weekend chess is organised at club level, although clubs are much larger, more in the nature of county associations. Other than being a member of a club and very possibly only one club at a time, there are ...

Re: NCCU CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2017-18

It is probably fair to say that the glory days of the NCCU club championship are behind it. However the competition still exists, albeit among a limited pool of clubs, and presumably the players in the teams that do enter enjoy doing so. At the end of the day there aren't that many opportunities for...

Re: Question about membership

Am I missing something here or is this just a case of the ECF billing a graded event for the relevant fees in accordance with what is now an established policy? I saw the contempt with which a suggestion that this should be raised with the ECF office was treated on a near identical thread.

Re: County Championship Consultation

Here's another radical suggestion. If it's a competition between Union qualifiers whose rules are not controlled by the ECF, why not remove the competition from the ECF and have it run by appointees of the Unions? This suggestion has been made by David Sedgwick up thread. In the past most consultat...

Re: County Championship Consultation

Which Yorkshire respondents have said that? Yorkshire hat (mainly) on for this one. Alex couldn't reasonably be expected to provide names. In theory we should be spoiled for choice in Yorkshire at all levels but our inter club infrastructure is not good and building up a player base is not easy.

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

I'm also going to return to a question I have asked before; namely why officers such as the Director of Women's Chess (currently vacant) and the Manager of disabled chess are not giving operational budgets Have we ever been told how this money might usefully be spent? If you wanted to have an event...

If there's an intent to persuade Berks or Bucks to reenter even the SCCU competitions, the contemptuous dismissal of eligibility issues says quite a lot.
What specific eligibility issues?

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

Just to add, I do have a few ideas I want to try locally and am looking to set in motion. I know writing verbose posts on forums is one of the easier bits.

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

Firstly I'm going to copy an excellent post that was made in the county championships thread as I believe a lot of it belongs on this thread (and I have said as much). Obviously there are some embedded quotes that refer directly to the county championships and are being discussed elsewhere. I think ...

Re: County Championship Consultation

Having read the posts from Hok Yin Stephen Chiu I do feel he is posting in the wrong thread. There is a fairly big difference between increasing participation and attracting new demographics to chess in general and focusing these specifically on the county championships which due to its nature (main...

Re: County Championship Consultation

A very interesting post above with very little that I disagree with although it goes a little bit beyond the consultation paper for the county championships, an event with a distinct culture and traditions. A lot of it ties into the `Attracting New Players To The Game` thread I started in the genera...
