Re: Dominic Lawson on Question Time (BBC Radio 4) now

And if you were to tell Diane Abbott to her face that she was talking nonsense I doubt she would consider it disrespectful although she might robustly defend her views; I think I can safely say she will have had much worse said to her. Even if what Diane Abbott says is nonsense to the ears of some p...

Re: Dominic Lawson on Question Time (BBC Radio 4) now

I'm not seriously suggesting that gambling, smoking and drinking are the most important factors causing poverty (and I don't recall Lawson saying this either) but they are factors over which, notwithstanding the point about addiction, individuals have some control. And I'm somewhat intolerant of pe...

Re: Dominic Lawson on Question Time (BBC Radio 4) now

Now that is a foolish comment, not least by your normal standards. Nowhere in his criticism of Lawson does Gerard Killoran advocate the wasting of the poor's money by the poor. If gambling, smoking, and drinking are normal social activities in our society - just as watching TV, buying a newspaper, ...

Re: Dominic Lawson on Question Time (BBC Radio 4) now

I've now listened to Lawson's reply and he spends little or no time on the the real causes of poverty, but spends his most of his answer criticising the poor for gambling, smoking and drinking. We've had to listen to this nonsense ever since the nineteenth century. Some people might like chess to b...

Re: Dominic Lawson on Question Time (BBC Radio 4) now

My personal politics are very much against the views expressed by Dominic Lawson. However it's worth contrasting his relatively smooth ECF Presidency with the most recent President who was elected to the role due to his media profile and who proved an unmitigated disaster, ironically largely due to ...

Re: ECF Membership List

If you search for your club on the ECF grading database you can then click on a list of all players affiliated to your club with a margin that shows their membership status (or lack thereof). The league management software also has an option to generate a report of non members. So two very workable ...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Go ahead and note it - what specifically are you thinking of? It's more generalisations than specifics Then I'll take it that the problems you're noting may be more imaginary than real. There was a rumour a few years back that one of the country's biggest congresses might lose its hotel venue. Anot...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Or perhaps the problem is best looked at the other way. I'm a sponsor; let's assume I'm a local business keen to support the local community. I don't know much about how chess is actually organised but I used to play at school and I always enjoyed it. All I want in return for my cash is a little bit...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

it's worth noting what grass roots players have done to deter sponsors in the past. Go ahead and note it - what specifically are you thinking of? It's more generalisations than specifics but I do think a lot of grassroots organisers and players don't realise the importance of putting on a professio...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Well that will probably teach me to post late at night and not read back what I've written. I meant excessive not obsessive. I also take Geoff's hint that perhaps this was not intended as a serious thread. The offer to start such a thread is one I may well take up although we have had similar thread...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

Hi Andrew, I'm way ahead of you. The letter has been drafted. Dear Sir, Please give me £250,000 so I can give it to four chess players who you have probably never heard of. They will play two normal games of chess then some speed chess. The whole thing should take 6-7 days. I will nickname them the...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

That is why Roger this sum of money paid out to the 'Fantastic Four' was so disappointing. Chess at the coalface has to depend on donations, hand outs, charity and a small army of unpaid dedicated volunteers. Whether the sponsor considered it value for their money is something only they will know. ...

Re: Need some help of what to do?

I'm not sure why my old dispute is being raised again. Some posts think I'm stuck in the mud about finishing a game of chess, but in this case I was not allowed to complete the game. An incorrect claim on a clock (& seems that the clock was not presented as evidence). The appeal panel made a decisi...

Re: Need some help of what to do?

This is one reason I support direct entry to the county championships with no link to the union stages. Some people accept defeat swiftly and with good grace. Others do so more slowly, but come round. On this matter, the members of the ECF Board fall into that category. Then there are those who see...

Re: Need some help of what to do?

you have become the Manchester Chess Federation open team Captain. One of the originators on the Lancs side of this forty year old and counting dispute has died, There do however seem to be those in Lancashire who want to keep it going as a memorial. County open teams were at the heart of the origi...
