Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

These players deserve all this private money. I suspect the sponsors get a lot of benefit too. The players give a lot of time to promote the game too. Poker Stars have similar size prize fund tournaments & more every couple of hours. Messi was paid not to play last night & guess what happened? Somet...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

Nick if we have current info for all moving to monthly will have an effect on all. It may be useful for opponents to know x is on a run of 17/20 against an average opponent of 130 or 160 or 200. But the cost of collection & support to do this does not come cheap in terms of systems, monies & volunte...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

I'll be more confident if ECF surveyed it's members on this matter & published the results. before making any decision. What has the new incumbent got to say about this? To put this into context with something else - Brexit - a vote close but clear majority - Ok the PM says. Not what I thought was r...

Re: London Chess Classic

It is a great event. The combination of all the excitement for the Children, Teachers & then a great chess festival. I appreciate all of the team & the work. They are brilliant. Is there a festival like it with the best players in the world to those that are just starting? That they attract players ...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

I'm for change if it's good. I think the public transport system is far worse than 50 years ago.

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

I believe it is pointless to move to monthly lists. Why? What purpose? Perhaps volunteers will un-volunteer. Imagine league football with say 3 lists in a season. Promotion & relegation. Trophy presentation. What is the point. Will it give us more for our annual fee? A move back to annual will be fi...

Re: AGM Minutes

Michael I apologise - thanks Andrew and David for pointing it out. My words were harsh and I was bang out of order. I forget that I cannot hold ECF & Council to account in the same way as Local Government Officers. I'm a Finance Manager but also have been on lots of stints of election counting. it i...

Re: AGM Minutes

Michael as you were in attendance in the capacity of Voting registration officer & seemed not to be ready for that task I take it that you are the volunteer responsible that was not of the same quality as last time.

Perhaps next meeting & next years AGM will seem to be a lot smoother

Re: AGM Minutes

A bit late if a scheduled treatment for not making arrangements & potential increased costs. It shows a lack of volunteers overall. Of course if we have Council making these decisions it is no wonder we have a lack of a coherent strategy & budget with many contrary views/ Seems strange to have signi...

Re: Media comments on chess

Dominic put some good spin on 1993 if my memory is correct.
Jennifer Saunders comedy is less funny than it used to be.
HIGNFY is based on satirical news & fake news.
I expect they will now take the mick out of the World Boxing Championship.
What happened to their former presenter?

Re: ECF Supporter

Why not just sign up anyway for a fiver? I think we all missed a trick this month in an absence of social chess activities with WCC pub/wine bar.
Leaving work too late to play club chess, but will love a social chess fix instead.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

On the 1993 match day I went to they removed the ear phones but put in extra opera glasses. Then again I really cannot cope with multi-media, flashing lights, etc. I'm happy to watch in silence & catch up with any analysis after & at a much later date. Pretty depressed all November about the lack of...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

I'm speculating - has this been such a poor WCC that a New Years resolution may be to give up chess? Or perhaps move to Norway? If Norway celebrates chess is grabbing attention. Is Magnus going to retire? So putting a spoke up the next cycle. Not a lot of London excitement. Too many other attraction...
