Re: Women's World Championship

Today was the only game in the match I've really watched much of live, but have all of the games been of a similar quality to this one, or was this of a lower standard then a lot of the others? I don't want to sound too harsh (I know its easy to be critical when you're sat at home with a computer p...

Re: DIV 3 North..more teams wanted..

The less southernly based venues for Division 3 & 4 South may tempt some teams (eg Shropshire) to try their luck with 3 weekends in Telford and 2 in Daventry/Staverton. I thought it was 4 in Daventry, 1 in Bedford? Oops, mixing myself up with Division One and Two  That said, it's still a big ...

Re: DIV 3 North..more teams wanted..

With the end of another season of 4ncl chess, we can look ahead to next season after the summer `break`.. It looks like some new teams would be very welcome next season in the Div 3 North section. Can any of our northern groups oblige with some new teams...maybe from Derbyshire, South Yorks, Lancas...

Re: Women's World Championship

If it wasn't for the nice stalemate trick after 45.....f4 it could have been worse. Ju leads 5-4 so Tan must win with black to keep the match going. You'd have thought that unlikely, but there have been 3 black wins to 2 with white (with only 4 draws, not what we are used to with the men, not sure ...

Yup.

Can't say I fancy Tan's chances of getting after a win today.

Re: Division One 2017-18

Good to see Andy Horton getting a 2nd IM norm; I had wondered about the short draws this weekend The following norms were also achieved this year: GM Norms AUS Justin Tan (Oxford) - 3rd and final GM norm. Rating required. IM Norms IRL David Fitzsimons (Wood Green) - 3rd and final IM norm. Title ach...

I'm always interested in looking at individual cases, but don't have time to do the preliminary detective work to find out who this is.
There's only 28 pages of unrated Indians born in 2005 and 30 pages for those born in 2004 so it won't take you long

Re: Winning without doing anything

I can be amazed sometimes how it's possible to win quickly with the Black pieces without actually doing very much and in a mostly positional opening for good measure. Here's the position r4rk1/1pqbbppp/p7/3Qp3/8/1P3P2/PBP3PP/2KR2NR b - - 0 14 and here's how we got there 1. b3 e5 2. Bb2 d6 3. e3 c5 ...

Re: New Idea for Caro-Kann players

I mean, if you want to convince me that 7...e5 is playable based on that game, there's the small matter that Shankland flattened it... Because he was the better player, rather than any fundamental defect in that particular line? What would it have looked like if Shankland had beaten Liang because o...

Re: 2018 USA Chess Championship

Paikidze offered a draw as soon as she saw the Wang result and Goletiani (who was slightly better but low on time) accepted. So tiebreak tomorrow. Game 1 of the tie-break underway and on move 27 https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tournaments/us-womens-championship-2018/12/1/1 Ending in a convincing ...
