Re: Britbase Updates

That is really nice. You wonder how they found combinations like that without computer assistance! Maybe I have got it wrong... I will check. "They" didn't find it. If you look up-thread you can see that Kelly played Ra3 and lost. I didn't find it either - the engine flagged it up when I was checki...

Re: Britbase Updates

Thanks for these two games, Gerard, which I have now added to the file at BritBase: https://www.saund.org.uk/britbase/pgn/190508bcf-viewer.html The final move in both the newspapers was 33...Kt-Q1 (not 34). The fact that the same score error appears in both papers is not significant as it was probab...

Re: Britbase Updates

DR Lester is rather elusive. I'm pretty certain he was Denis Raymond Lester, born in Burton on Trent in 1916. His family moved to the Slough area a few years later, which is where he played chess in the late 1930s. He had a sister, Nina Eunice, whose birth was registered in Windsor in 1922, and who...

Re: Britbase Updates

Minor inaccuracies aside, your memory still seems phenomenal to me, Leonard, speaking as a youngster of 71 who is heavily reliant on printed sources for info. Here's the record of an earlier Croydon v West London, on 7 October 1944, in which you took part. BCM (December 1944, page 281) spelt your na...

Re: Britbase Updates

I played for Croydon against a West London team including Captain Beamish some time in 1945 (probably autumn). I vaguely remember looking at his game and thinking, yes, he does have a military air. My opponent was Dr SP Schotz, on or around Board 15, so the Captain and I may have been quite close. ...

Re: Ronnie Ives and the Yorkshire Evening Post Chess Column

Most of the material newly posted on the Ronnie Ives page at BritBase were newspaper cuttings loaned to me by Ingrid, so the thanks are more due to her. I found some more material on the online British Newspaper Archive, including the article with the ludicrous 'Dutch Woman Loses...' headline. That ...

A game from the 1904 British Ladies Championship. It's not specified which of Miss Finn's queens made the final move.

Many thanks, Richard. I have added the game to the BritBase collection.

Re: County Chess Longest Playing Player

I guess the question is did he play County chess in 1953 or before as this would make 65 years? Yes. In Brian Denman's collection of John Cannon's games, the earliest county match was Northumberland vs Cheshire, 20 October 1951, played in York, when John Cannon drew with C Townsend on board 11. I'm...

Re: Britbase Updates

Thanks, Richard. I've re-read your piece and concluded, like you, that the "A Beamish" active in London chess was Edmund Arthur Beamish, despite him being referred to as "A Beamish" in multiple contemporary references (at a time when forename initials seemed to be de rigueur ). I think I shall compr...

Re: Britbase Updates

Thanks for the game, Gerard. Duly added to BritBase. The Beamish question... I read through the relevant thread a few days ago and still couldn't make up my mind. If Richard James is stumped, then I'm clean bowled, out LBW and caught behind all at the same time. It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery in...

Re: Bertie Cohen - 1925 Lancashire Champion

Some interesting contributions since I started this thread - many thanks to all who have posted. There is no doubt in my mind now that that the "E" of "B. E. Cohen" was a typo by the Manchester Guardian (and not just because said newspaper is famous for them). Looking back at the quotation from that...
