Re: County Chess Longest Playing Player
I guess the question is did he play County chess in 1953 or before as this would make 65 years? Yes. In Brian Denman's collection of John Cannon's games, the earliest county match was Northumberland vs Cheshire, 20 October 1951, played in York, when John Cannon drew with C Townsend on board 11. I'm...

Re: Britbase Updates
Thanks, Richard. I've re-read your piece and concluded, like you, that the "A Beamish" active in London chess was Edmund Arthur Beamish, despite him being referred to as "A Beamish" in multiple contemporary references (at a time when forename initials seemed to be de rigueur ). I think I shall compr...

Re: Britbase Updates
Thanks for the game, Gerard. Duly added to BritBase. The Beamish question... I read through the relevant thread a few days ago and still couldn't make up my mind. If Richard James is stumped, then I'm clean bowled, out LBW and caught behind all at the same time. It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery in...

Re: Bertie Cohen - 1925 Lancashire Champion
Some interesting contributions since I started this thread - many thanks to all who have posted. There is no doubt in my mind now that that the "E" of "B. E. Cohen" was a typo by the Manchester Guardian (and not just because said newspaper is famous for them). Looking back at the quotation from that...

Ronnie Ives and the Yorkshire Evening Post Chess Column
Forum readers will already be aware of Ronnie Ives and his role as weekly chess columnist for the Yorkshire Evening Post between 1958 and 1964. His daughter Ingrid Ives shared a number of press cuttings of these columns here last year in this thread as well as providing some fascinating material abo...

Re: Britbase Updates
Thanks for the 1979 and 1985 games, Gerard, which I have added to the collection. You had previously sent me the game fragment from 1923 a year or so ago and it is already on BritBase. The version you have just posted is missing a pair of moves (69 Ke3 Ke7 and only then 70 g6, etc).

Re: Britbase Updates
Here's a puzzle, this was one of four games left for adjudication. Somerset were losing 7-5 but tied the match and went through on board count, meaning they were awarded 3 wins and 1 draw or 2 wins and 2 draws. I can't find any report giving the result of the game below and assume it was given as a...
