Re: Media comments on chess

I try to believe 3 impossible things before breakfast, When they agreed to Zukhar sitting at the back of he hall, I asked Petra, 'But won't he still be able to affect Viktor?' She responded, 'oh no. The force weakens the further away you are. Who could have known she knew the Inverse Square Law?' O...

Jiu Jitsu Chess

I'm guessing most of us wouldn't be up to this version of the game which is very courteous and violent! The board was set up correctly, king and queen on their correct squares and I didn't see any illegal moves. The game was a Scandinavian just as it was in the Harry Potter film The Philosopher's St...

Re: Hastings Congress seeking sponsor

Oh dear well this isn't going to help then. Paul Smith was the Chairman of the organising committee and has just been jailed for two years. I would point out there is no suggestion he took any money from the tournament. Story here.

Dubov beat Giri Wow you would have to be brave to play like Dubov did, his 19th is a real shocker: [Event "Moscow GP "] [Site "?"] [Date "2019.??.??"] [Round "2"] [White "Dubov"] [Black "Giri"] [Result "1-0"] [ECO "D44"] [PlyCount "72"] 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. 1903 "A Chess Dispute"

The earliest known chess film from 1903, a one-minute silent black and white comedy by British film pioneer Robert W. Paul. Two gentlemen play chess, and while one looks away, the other moves two pieces at once, and that’s where the dispute begins.

Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

Article in El Pais by Leontxo Garcia on Firouzja. Its the opening paragraph that is interesting: "The prodigious Iranian Alireza Firouzja, 15, is today the main candidate to be the next great chess champion. But he has reason to feel very irritated and frustrated: his government forced him last Fri...

Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

ChessBase article on the Firouzja boycott and loss to a 14 year old girl in the next round. The Editorial Postscript at the end of the article caught my attention: "These incidents reflect poorly on the Islamic Republic of Iran, and its individual players are as often victims as perpetrators. In a s...

Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

Firouzja clearly affected by the events of the previous round. Nigel wades in with : "If GM Hikaru, for example, were to object to playing Norwegians on religious/racial/political grounds, he would be told to go forth and multiply. This ought to be (but, alas, has not been) FIDE's answer to any requ...

Here we go again:

"Alireza Firouzja's chances of qualifying for the 2020 GRENKE Chess Classic suffered a big blow today when he was paired against an Israeli player and forfeited the game rather than face serious trouble back home in Iran".
