Re: Making chessmen and chess boards

I have an old wooden (largely lathe turned) chess set. The white pieces are some sort of pale hardwood, perhaps beech. (The black pieces are likely the same but heavily painted black.) The knights were made in two pieces, a turned base and a head cut from wood sheet, as anyone knew who had carried o...

Re: Making chessmen and chess boards

Try walnut wood offcuts? :: heartwood for the black pieces, sapwood for the white pieces; for the white pieces use a varnish that does not darken the wood.

Printing of a chess game score affected by Word for Windows's foibles

I tried to arrange a chess game score in Word for Windows, to get a layout in tables. My Word for Windows tried to check its spelling and grammar as if it was English text. The result was:- (1) Some blue underlining added. (2) Some text was printed in blue. (3) Wavy red underlining for supposed miss...

Hostage chess

Has "hostage chess" lived up to its hopes of being widely known and played?

Seehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostage_chess

I can only find one video about it in Youtube.

Shogi

Please, do you know of any good internet forums about shogi? (Today I Google searched for "shogi forum", and I was swamped by a long list of planned big personal shogi-related meetings.)

Laws of chess

I have found the current laws of chess, at http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html?id=207&view=article I know that running out of time (i.e. the clock flag falling) causes loss, but the laws do not seem to say all of this clearly all together in one rule. Which rules must be put together to establish...

Re: Regnal Numbers

... I can't see any problem with a King Andrew, or David or Patrick for that matter. But they do seem to stick with the same few names, presumably to honour previous monarchs. I assume we won't have a King Phillip as Spain has had six. Although the latest seems to be styled as both Felipe and Phill...

Re: Rules of chess

I read about another sort of unsighted chess :: long ago in Central Asia two sighted men riding horses side by side playing chess by calling moves to each other without using physical board or pieces.

Rules of chess

http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html?id=171&view=article I found at that address the FIDE official rules of chess. Is there anywhere a timetable of the changes of rule that have happened since FIDE started? In rule "Appendix D. Rules for play with blind and visually disabled players" it says that...
