Re: The plans for the Grading System

......as a junior programmer back in 1980. The sort of data binding and close coupling you are suggesting would cripple the system as well as being highly insecure. Those were the days , eh Brian? (:>) I was in IT myself in the late 70s, writing COBOL on those punch card forms, getting it punched u...

Re: The plans for the Grading System

You might want to bear in mind that it's probably not a good idea to let LMSs drop results directly into the new MySQL Grading database that you are creating - ever. It would probably be better to create a new, second database, purely for the incoming results data. That only makes sense if the two ...

Re: The plans for the Grading System

I shall do my best, but I'm a small voice! Many thanks Michael. May the FORCE be with you! (:>) Graham - the answer to your question is no, the ECF LMS will not have exclusive IT interface to the grading system. And many thanks to you as well, Howard. - the reason that you have not been advised on ...

Re: The plans for the Grading System

You need some some sort of working group with sufficient IT knowledge to make the call on an LMS choice. Indeed. Some information about the proposal and its impact would also be a good idea. Maybe even a Business Case. Maybe a cost / benefit analysis. And maybe the existence of a Manager for ICT to...

Re: The plans for the Grading System

LMS is the main enabler to simplify grading submission. Incorrect! An ECF LMS is only an "enabler to simplify grading submission" if:- 1. it interfaces to the grading system in an effective manner, and 2. Leagues actually use it. As far as I can tell, the current proposals don't seem to address eit...

Re: The plans for the Grading System

It's now up on the main ECF site. http://www.englishchess.org.uk/league-management-system-tender-for-software-development It shouldn't have been put out to tender yet. Currently, the Home Director has no authority to do this as he has not obtained the agreement of Council. As Carl pointed out this ...

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

Instant result reporting is probably the approach to take, it could even potentially cope with a club tournament management system which was a piece of paper in the cupboard. That also describes a need for inputs to be "mobile" compatible. Agreed. Have a look at http://www.shropshirechess.org/graha...

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

It would be a trivial task to change that into a direct update of an ECF database, if ECF provided the links. ..... Would these not require change to the ECF central systems? Yes, but those changes have to happen anyway if ECF is going to offer it's own League Management software with the intention...

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

It's not what the ECF intends. The proposed LMS would be for leagues which have either no software or less functional software. You may like to see the discussion here . Many thanks. I've been away from the forum for quite some time and had missed this whole subject, unfortunately. It was actually ...

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

Try looking at Score Checker on the Somerset web-site http://www.somersetchess.org . I believe this is the preferred system (Alex H has confirmed this is not privileged information). . There's obviously been a lot of work that has gone into this, and voluntary I imagine, so full respect to the deve...

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

Yes, there were applicants. Is there any documentation describing what functionality this software is required to deliver, how it is to be used, how it is to be maintained, and what the selection process is? Basically, any documentation that can be used by members, such as myself, to help decide wh...

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

Something else: I didn't see proposals for the implementation of League Management Software or for a switch to monthly grading. It might come in under Budget and Finance proposals, there again it may have been dropped for the time being. Were there any applicants for the project of supplying the so...

Re: Directors Reports

The Shropshire League has been using its own results database for 4 seasons now. Results are entered by team captains via a php webpage and update an SQL database in real time. This allows everyone to see the results of every match, immediately, as well as summaries and statistics of the performance...
