Re: Best Wishes GM Dr. Jonathan Mestel (13-iii-1957)
A little surprised at the "titan" soubriquet.... obviously a great player but multi-talented and sensibly enough focused on some of the other things he is very good at, rather than playing in many grandmaster tournaments - as Miles, Nunn and (to some extent) Stean and Speelman of the same era. I rem...

Re: Happy Birthday GM Raymond Keene OBE (29-i-1948)
Good report about the 1984 match https://www.olimpbase.org/1984g/1984in.html - I had forgotten that Krogius was there as captain. "Most chess fans in Britain would not have known details of the match until they saw Leonard Barden's Guardian column on June 23rd, the day after the Soviet team arrived ...

Re: Pedants United
Some "accepted" RP pronunciations change. I believe - though cannot find a reference - that, in the early years of the 20C, "syndrome" was pronounced "Syn-drom-ee" - to rhyme with epitome.

Re: Remembering William Ritson Morry (05-ix-1910 08-i-1994)
Yes Hartston could have been much more generous with the obituary without inconveniencing himself; I remember that some British players (Bellin particularly springs to mind) criticised the Hastings events - compared them unfavourably to Wijk-an-Zee - but they took place. I had forgotten the tremendo...

Re: Remembering William Ritson Morry (05-ix-1910 08-i-1994)
As a schoolboy, I played in Ritson's Easter events from the mid-60s, which he seemed to organise almost single-handedly (was this true?) and for this we should be very grateful. The international tournaments are mentioned - some exciting games - Miles' first grandmaster scalps, I think. Generally sl...

Re: Closing Gambit
"'Chess Crisis' RDK's book of the Spassky match. .... I have two copies, if you PM me any address I'll send you a copy (free!) I need the space!" Hi Geoff - what an extraordinarily kind offer - thank you indeed. However, I hope you will not be offended if I pass... I have a queue of chess books wait...

Re: Closing Gambit
I very much enjoyed it ... fascinating to see characters like Timman, Hort, Sosonko ... Conquest, Stean as they were recently. The match took place just before I (largely) gave up chess first time around. Yes, thank you for pointing it out - I watch little TV and would not have scanned the schedule ...

Re: Great British Intelligence Test
Many thanks for sharing this - my score seems similar to yours.... I think there were some sections where time was important but that was not apparent to me ... some where I was correct with each item but overall my score was low because I had not done as many as others.... but good exercise

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
I was able to play in one event only - Old Folks Rapid. I had some difficulties knowing how to get into it, which others on this Forum helped with (I'm grateful). Really well organised and controlled - efficient, friendly, touches of humour... I think all the old folk behaved. Very enjoyable. My tha...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
Many thanks David - for your specific help here and for the work you do in general. It seems that my entry had gone astray and I wasn't being sent information about the clubs and method of entering - I've forwarded my copy of the receipt to the Controller who took immediate action; I now appear to b...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
Thank you David... no, having paid £15 I would like to play in the qualifiers; if I should be fortunate enough to qualify then I will look to rearrange my Sunday plans. Thanks to advice on this site, I have applied to join the club you indicate - but I don't know how I was supposed to know this with...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
Ah! Really appreciate your help - I don't seem to have received that email - the only mail I have says: "Thank you, your entry has been received. When your payment is confirmed, your entry will be put through ..." the money has been taken, I'm in the list of entrants but no mail as you describe. (No...

Re: British Online Chess Championships 18th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021
Many thanks Wadih... yes, I have only entered the Rapidplay qualifier, so you've given me a very helpful lead... however, I don't understand how I find 'the right tournament section "club"' ... I've looked in "English Chess Federation - Members" Club on chess.com but that doesn't seem to help, other...
