I think Paul has missed a slight bit of sarcasm.

Well, it's more that it's that I'm not interested in people yapping about provocations, which may be thrilling for the kind of people who want to be provoked, but less so for anybody else.

Re: Falkland Islands

I'm bemused by the criticisms being made of the UK, the Falklands, the ECF and FIDE. Argentinians of various descriptions have organised a tournament on foreign soil and submitted the results for grading as if played on Argentinian soil "innocently?" The Falkland, the ECF etc have drawn this to the ...

Re: Carlsen, Anand and Ding Liren to play in the UK

I doubt that many coins change hands, but a slight rewrite might make the sentence more plausible:

It revolves around money - as now do most man-made things - but there's more to it than just the bit coins.

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

I'd like to see the Member reps get more votes, but given the flak they take, I wonder Well there are two ways of doing that: 1. Stick with the same number of reps and increase their individual votes. I don't think that is a good idea. OK, 6 votes is relatively mild in the world of Council vote acq...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

Well the only candidate I can think of meeting Andrew's description is perhaps Chris Fegan who has argued (as I recall) that the membership should directly elect the Board and that Council should be abolished. Apologies Chris if I haven't got that right. I did once ask Chris to elaborate on here but...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

The underlying warning from some posters seems to be that OMOV is a potential killer for the ECF - akin to releasing a viral infection into the bloodstream of the body politic, or a horde of barbarians into the civilised citadel from the environs of the Forum. Entirely in your imagination John - th...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

It's an abbreviation for omo virus, a strain of Qalyub orthonairovirus, a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus discovered in a rat's nest in a tomb wall in the Egyptian town of Qalyub. I thought everyone knew that.

I agree with all the criticisms made in this thread.
I disagree with all of the proposed solutions which will either make no difference or make matters worse.
There's my really helpful positive contribution :-(

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

There's possibly a problem with tournaments that specify an absolute upper bound for grades, particularly those designed to appeal to the "chess tourist". In other words someone travelling away from home for a weekend break. They would have to have a policy as to which monthly grading/rating list w...

Re: NEW CHESS RATING SYSTEM

Effective immediately global ratings for all humans (non players too) have been set to 10,000 Draws will not affect ratings. Ratings will rise or fall based on the formula 250-number of moves of the loser. The combined gain & loss for a game will always be zero. There is no ratings floor or ceiling...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

To frame this as a disagreement between Council and Board overlooks that the biggest block vote in Council is the Board members. There is no evidence to suggest this is a disagreement between traditionalists and innovators. It is a disagreement between those who want more centralisation, and higher...
