Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
If no-one knows what precautions are sensible, is it reasonable to think that a judge would be looking at, for example, whether the advice "you should continue to wear a mask" was in force at the time? I'm sure it would be highly relevant whether government guidance was observed, yes. That includes...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
Jacques, in that respect, what do you see as the legal difference between organising a chess tournament where someone can be proved to have caught Covid and opening a shop/supermarket where the same thing (and let's here assume the customer buys something so that a contract exists!) happens. Isn't ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
We have no idea what your odds are of being found liable for causing people to die of CoViD. Or whether "come to this event at your own risk" is enough to indemnify yourself. Actually we do know the latter: it isn't. Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, section 2. The risk may not be great, but it isn't...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal
It is about individual choice and risk appetite. Yes, but the individual choice is a moral choice as well as a calculation of one's personal risk tolerance. As Professor Wilson points out, "The moral case for the risk mitigation measures above extends beyond the risk to the players; consideration s...

Re: Illegal move penalties
Yes, that's correct. If players keep doing that they do deserve to be penalised, but not with a forfeit for a first offence. They deserve to be penalised appropriately, even for a first offence. If you're in desperate time trouble and your opponent unfairly nicks some of your remaining time, tellin...

Re: Illegal move penalties
There are many reasons it's not ideal for a first illegal move to result in an instant loss - a piece getting knocked over whilst going to press the clock is an illegal move for example! Surely it's only illegal if you press the clock before correcting the position? People who do that deserve to be...

Re: New online phenomenon
I have also noticed this phenomenon in recent months. An extreme example from a three-minute game on Lichess last night: I was Black and the game went 1 e4 c5 2 Resigns. Some people just don't want to face certain openings. At my patzer level I seem to get a lot of aborted games when I play 1.Nf3 o...

Re: ECF AGM 2021
Chess in England seems to be dominated by a fear of having to play against "underrated juniors". It is beyond pathetic. Sometimes you face a young opponent who is too good and beats you, just say well played and be happy that the new generation is coming through. Fear has nothing to do with it. If ...

Re: ECF AGM 2021
There would be less incentive to do so if by playing in one's "proper" section one did not run the risk of meeting several underrated juniors.Alex McFarlane wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 3:24 pmI don't know what you do to prevent 'established' players playing in too high a section.

Re: CSC - the achievements
I’m not disputing what you say. There was some public response from CSC and the time of the study being published but I’m not a spokesperson for CSC and don’t want to be perceived as such so I think it’s best i don’t try to answer for them. I didn't mean to imply that you were in any sense speaking...

Re: CSC - the achievements
You can check The study’s conclusions, but in essence no significant difference was found between the CSC schools and the control group of non CSC schools. Whether that’s a problem depends on your point of view. If you’re an advocate of the ‘chess makes you smarter’ philosophy then you certainly ha...

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll
As previously discussed, the end of the Covid regulations does not mean that organisers need not fear repercussions if their precautions are deemed inadequate.

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll
Not intending to be awkward, but... Suppose you wear a mask at the start of the game so the opponent has no excuse to claim an unearned half point, then rip off the mask, preferably in a flamboyant way, after one move? If the opponent then complains, you get the whole point surely? I was thinking t...

Re: Chess Covid regulations poll
Suppose I would normally wear a mask but I happen to know that my opponent, a much stronger player, will decline to play someone who is not wearing a mask. If I don't wear one for this game, I "win" half a point instead of the expected zero.
