League Leader Mark Leonard reaches 1,000 points and has now moved up to 47th place overall but still trailing the leader Toni Haapanen of Finland who has 1112 points by over 70.
Is 47th the highest anyone in our league has ever been?

Re: Div 3 North 2017 - 18

I don't think the last weekend pairings should be decided before weekend 4 is played. It is possible that one of the teams currently on 7 points might lose their next two matches and one of the teams on 6 might win theirs. Why should one of the leaders then play a team on 7 points rather than a team...

Re: Rapidplay in the heart of Wensleydale 16th September

The event is organised by Kegan Harrison of Great Ayton Chess Club, who also works at the venue. This is actually the second event to be held there. I was one of the 19 players who took part in the first one in May, and it was a very enjoyable day at an excellent venue. Unfortunately I won't be able...

Re: Proposed British Chess Championship Qualifying Regulations

Although it says "There is no proposed change to the 2017 Regulation regarding the qualification scores required from the British Championship or the Major Open", presumably there actually will be a change since there will only be 9 rounds instead of 11 from this year onwards.

Re: Why not three points for a win?

Given the pairing rules of most tournaments, I suspect all Stewart's system will do is make "most blacks" the automatic first tie-breaker. Well, I suppose it's as good as any other arbitrary tie-breaker. It could make Swiss pairings a bit awkward, unless Black's extra point is ignored for pairing p...

Re: Div 3 North 2016-17

I think the two groups of nine format would need very accurate seeding. If one group was much weaker than the other, then the two Swiss rounds at the end probably wouldn't be enough to compensate for the advantage of starting in the weaker group. With three groups of six the teams starting in the we...

Re: London Chess Classic - all tournaments to be FIDE rated

Is there any reason why the weekend tournament finishes as late as 8.30 on Sunday? I'd like to play in it but the need for an extra night's accommodation at London prices, and to take a day off work on the Monday, makes it rather less attractive.

Re: 4NCL 2015-16

Could be interesting if the number of teams in division 3N isn't convenient. I imagine arranging fixtures for an 11 round competition with 13 teams might not be straightforward.

Re: Scarborough 2014

Is there an official total for the number of entries? Alex's post above said 351 entries but the website says there were 356. This could be significant as according to the Blackpool congress website their event had 353 players taking part.
