Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

I've considerable sympathy for those outfits, or at any rate some of them, which haven't been able to raise teams. In the case of long-established teams, where most of the same players take part from one year to the next, it should be quite easy to predict the team's human resources. In the case of ...

Re: Chess is sport!?

Many definitions of "sport", including OED, include "physical exertion" as one component. This works against chess yet it's probably fair to argue that the physical exertion required to move a chess piece is, for example, no less than the physical exertion required to squeeze a rifle trigger yet sho...

If the government are going to insist on the distinction being of significance, then they can't redefine chess on a whim for some regulations but not others.

Re: World Teams 2019

With respect, I think most sources define betting, or gambling, as staking money on something that has an uncertain outcome Like investing your pension fund, then? Well, I suppose one could argue that nothing in this world has an absolutely certain outcome - occurrences such as a nuclear war or an ...

Re: World Teams 2019

Poker is as much a game of skill as chess. So when I play on pokerstars I do not consider it gambling.

With respect, I think most sources define betting, or gambling, as staking money on something that has an uncertain outcome irrespective of whether skill in involved in determining that outcome.

Re: World Teams 2019

This result should be on the TV evening national news. Who's the ECF publicity director again? LOL, I'm not quite sure it'll overshadow the latest Brexit developments but yes, it's worth a minor news item in the quality national media. Congratulations to the team who I suspect probably wouldn't hav...

Re: ECF Grading Proposals

"Being sure is not a concept fitting with statistics theory!" That's true! I'm happy to bow to your statistical knowledge. The essential point Brian was making was, I think, that one can make inferences from sets of statistical data but only with a certain degree of confidence - and, even if one is...

Re: Arbitration question

In fact, with a slight variation of the above theme, one could have 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 d4 d6 and now White, in a dumb moment, plays 4 Nxe5. He immediately realises his error, replaces both pieces and - relying on the fact that 4.3.3 places him under an obligation to capture the e5 pawn but not with...
