Re: Katarzyna Toma first Board 1 in county first team chess

"For the moment Worcestershire CA and Katarzyna are claiming a new chess record"

Prima facie, you do indeed have a county first in that Katarzyna appears to be the first woman to play on top board for Worcestershire.

Re: World Youth Championships

"Quite how he managed to have a conversation without realising it was confidential escapes me." Maybe it wasn't confidential at the time, then someone realised later, that they didn't want it discussed, so decided retrospectively it was confidential? A conversation either was confidential or was no...

Cheers, Roger! Always happy to stand corrected

Does ATM PARENT foot the bill?
LOL, an ATM PARENT might end up footing the bill in more ways than one.

I was a near-contemporary of Paul in our junior days so I'm sorry to hear of his death.

Re: World Youth Championships

John is obviously entitled to his opinion and has chosen an entirely civilised approach to expressing it. As for myself, I remain [and intend to remain] in the dark - really not interested! - as to the exact nature of the indiscretion which to my mind is an entirely different question to how, if at ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Not True. I was in the same class.... SNIP... John... told us how we could beat the Sicilian. ... SNIP... And he did building blocks. One day I proudly showed teacher that I spelt ARM NET and TAP . John appeared and quickly arranged the bricks into: APARTMENT . He could've swapped an 'A' for an 'E ...

Re: World Youth Championships

Can you elaborate on exactly what course of action Alex H should have taken so that he wouldn't "simply draw added attention to it"? Certainly not. I wouldn't presume to tell someone who has made an error of judgment exactly how best to mitigate the resulting situation. Over the years I've occasion...

I don't.
Alex H was right to retract - even if he won't come clean.
I think you've misunderstood me - I lamented the consequences of Alex's action in "doing the correct thing".

Re: World Youth Championships

This all seems to advise against doing the correct thing and apologising for an inappropriate post as it simply draws added attention to it.

Re: Media comments on chess

It doesn't seem odd to anybody else that children aged three or less are apparently being introduced to chess? Absolutely not, although of course it only works if the child is naturally interested. I have always believed that young children are capable of quite serious thinking, and are limited pri...

Re: Media comments on chess

It doesn't seem odd to anybody else that children aged three or less are apparently being introduced to chess? Now, next to Karjakin, Russia’s best-known active chess player is Mikhail Osipov. At three, he played a televised game with Karpov. At four last month, he played Yuri Averbakh, 95, the wor...

Re: When Will The February Grades Come Out?

The ECF website to which Ian refers also says ‘The ECF Board is responding to changes in the expectations of both members and potential members by working to move grading from a six monthly to a monthly update. The intention is to introduce the change with effect from the January 2020 grading list u...

In a bag on the table when there is room.
I've been in club matches where there's plenty of room but I've yet to see a bag. But, given such a bag, who exactly accepts liability if a phone disappears from the [communal] bag?
