Re: 4NCL Online

An "interesting" format. Something of a significant advantage being seeded 5 compared to being seeded 1,2,3 or 4 (if I've understood correctly). Although in the circumstances I guess players would rather be in the top 4. I'm not sure if too many are going to be too bothered about the clauses about ...

If checkmate is delivered on a dark-coloured square, I say 'Stay out of the black and in the red, you get nothing in this game for two in a bed.' Admittedly, this does sometimes cause confusion.
Sure you're not confusing chess with roulette?

Re: 4NCL Online

What I haven't worked out yet is why, if the first 4 divisions are over 11 rounds, Division 5 is [doubtless there's a good reason] a Swiss of only 10.

Edit: Mike T has since politely pointed out the error of my ways - all five divisions are 10 rounds and I've signed up for a basic arithmetic course.

Re: The English Chess Federation Website and Twitter

I take it the main line is 1.Kd1 Ka3 2.Kc1 Ka2 3.h4 a5 4.h5 a4 6.h6 a3 7.h7 Ka1 8.h8N a2 9.Ng6 fxg6 10.f7 g5 11.f8N g4 12.Ne6 dxe6 13.d7 e5 14.d8N e4 15.Na6 bxa6 16.b7 a5 17.b8Q a4 18.Qb2#. Yes, except for the typo [15 Nc6 et seq] at move 15. This problem was a real joy to present to our juniors, p...

Re: 4NCL Online

I suspect the previous guesses may be too low - I'd expect a number of clubs still to be working out whether to enter, say, two teams or three and to leave that decision until the slower members of their clubs signify availability or otherwise. And yes, I'd certainly like to add my thanks to the oth...

Re: Worrying times

bit.ly/39t6PSg This is a video put out by the Czech Ministry of Health saying we should all wear face masks. I have to say that I believed the stories that only the proper ones do any good, but the Czechs don't think so and they seem to be doing quite well. Anyway, I'm going to make one and wear it...

Re: Online chess for young players

I 5 some child protection guidance so we do not fall foul of any allegations (however unfounded) - i suggest we made it clear that it is to parents responsiblity to monitor the children at all times when online On that specific point I'd strongly recommend [a] use of a platform which includes the f...

Not sure about that (me being English!)
Sorry, I did actually think that a moment too late. No offence intended or taken, I'm sure.
LOL, we'll await feedback from Scots offended at Geoff being mistaken for one of them!

Re: Online chess for young players

Ideally I'm looking at a closed group where they can play each other and I can share hints and tips. I'm experimenting with chess kids but haven't quite got to grips with it yet and the site isn't free. Andrew You can set up a closed group on, for example, Lichess where Watford Juniors among others...

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

Yes really, it first appeared yesterday evening with a much more provcative title. That may have been the case - I wasn't watching yesterday evening - but presumably we're agreed that what I've posted is reproduced from a currently-appearing longer article which others can access if they're interes...

You know that piece has already had to be re-titled and rewritten because of objections to it.

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

I don't propose adding anything further to this thread [so don't expect a reply from me if you disagree with what follows] which has a lot of dubious comment but it's probably worth drawing peoples' attention to a piece just written by the BBC health correspondent which includes the following observ...

Re: Final standings in abandoned leagues

Isthmian League was complete in 62-63. Last time not was War. For those whose memories don't stretch back that far, the Great Freeze began in the closing days of December 1962 and persisted until March. That certainly caused major problems, by comparison with which the postponement of football matc...
