Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

I stand to be corrected if I have under-estimated the efforts of others but my impression is that those responsible for the Netflix version of "The Queen's Gambit", whatever its faults, did more for chess than the collective contributions of those who criticise it here.

Re: World Chess - London Stock Exchange

I'd much rather buy into chess.com if they were available - of all the chess companies I have seen over the years they are one of the few that seem legitimately good at growing the business profitably Ultimate holding company is Flutter Entertainment which, in common with other gambling companies, ...

Re: Graded Band Tournaments

Alex, the juniors already believe that - but there's a third possibility, that juniors are on average under-rated and adults are on average over-rated, which is more statistically consistent.

Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

It's really a statement of the obvious but, for the benefit of any non-chess-playing forumites, Neville is reviewing this from the perspective of a player of the game. He's correct but only in the sense that, for example, "The Sound of Music" bears little resemblance to the realities of life in pre-...

Re: Sir George Alan Thomas

Sad that there will, probably, be no bio on, Sir George Thomas. I received a message from Jon Manley in October 2023 saying that he had been invited to co-write a book on Thomas (he didn't say who the other author(s) are/were). He had been touch with Paige, who had nothing further to add, and had a...

Re: Is This Arbiter's Interpretation of the Laws Correct?

The arbiter goes on to say that there was no point in applying a time penalty for this incident because White was clearly winning and had plenty of time on the clock, so didn't need an extra 2 minutes. Deciding not to give a player extra time on these grounds is clearly wrong. Yes, but consider the...

Re: The world's most handsome GM?

If you lack sufficient self-awareness to realise that this sort of thread might be a problem, than I really can't help, other than to please ask you to consider carefully before starting a thread like this in future. How you would advise someone that is not aware that they lack sufficient self-awar...

Re: The world's most handsome GM?

I assume that, if someone here asked "Has anyone ever been described as the world's most attractive lady GM?", this would attract instant criticism on the grounds that female players quite reasonably expect to be assessed on their merits as chess players rather than their perceived attractiveness. ...

Other side of this particular coin is the opponent who, not having been given this, asks not only your name but for a letter-by-letter spelling.

Lest anyone forget, ECF minutes read " It was proposed that the democratic reach of the Council be expanded by allowing clubs of an an appropriate size to apply for membership. Re: Cheating in chess

I mean, we have just had one of the world's major classical tournaments which was hardly devoid of wins. The most recent WC match wasn't exactly draw after draw after draw either. We have had talk of chess being played out for a full century now - and that's just what it is, talk. Musk is a confirm...

The proxy system is just one of the many unsatisfactory aspects of the present regime. ... My understanding is that our current proxies system is a consequence of Company Law under which you cannot limit the number of proxies that a single person can hold. Technically, clubs have always been able t...

Re: Cheating in chess

Kramnik has been worrying about this for a long time. At Oslo Airport on the way to the Tromsö World Cup in 2013, he sought me out to discuss. Later I arranged a meeting with Makro and I to discuss his concerns. His main worry was about 2700+ players. He thought that if they had an implanted microc...
