Re: Rank and File letters and numbers preference.

As someone who sometimes makes notation errors, I grew up with English Descriptive, I think correct lettering is a good thing.

Re: Who is our next Adams?

I more or less agree, but there are exceptions. It seems Lasker didn't even learn to play until he was 11 years old! ... Speelman and Nunn hit the top 100 at 23/4 and went on to spend time at the highest level. Nick At the risk of being , off your topic, great as Mickey and Jon Speelman are and hav...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

"It's all a very odd state of affairs. Why does Dvorkovich bother if he's not confident of winning? That is, why would the Russians put so much political capital at risk? Better surely to let Kirsan take the hit if Makropoulos is indeed 'past the post', as his mouthy outriders claim." Maybe this is ...

Re: County Championship Finals

Minor Surrey 9 Lincolnshire 7 I'm home and my individual trophy already has pride of place in the display cabinet. Perhaps people with loads of these things get blasé about them, but I'm thrilled with mine. Thanks to Surrey, the ECF and everyone involved. Congratulations Nick! Surrey isn't really a...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

After Malcolm Pein's excellent piece in Chess, I think the ECF should:

(i) most importantly, somehow welcome Russia withdrawing support from Kirsan, long overdue

(ii) indicate that the ECF will probably support a loser.

Chess For Heffalumps

If Tigers try to maximise the probability of winning as in Simon Webb's popular classic Chess for Tigers then I guess it is natural to assume Heffalumps try to maximise the probability of not losing. Chess for Tigers and Your Opponent is Overrated by J Schuyler, Everyman,2016 include useful guidance...

And if, as Spraggett alludes, there were to be a stitch-up between the Russians and Makro - putting the band back together again - where would that leave Malcolm Pein and his ambitions for 2022? Answers in a single word, frankly

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

The excellent "New in Chess" , 2018 4, gives Nigel Short two pages on "Why am I running for FIDE President" which concludes with " federations can choose either 1) Kirsan-the man who has brought FIDE to the brink of oblivion 2} Makro-the Kirsan continuity candidate 3)me". Am I alone in thinking the ...

Re: Iran v Israel Chess

FIDE have a regulation that, if two countries are at war with each other, yet are playing in the same event, then they are allowed to refuse to be paired together. Thus presumably, during the Falklands crisis, Argentine and UK teams did not have to play against each other. The problem regarding Isr...
