Charity walk

Dear all I was torn between 'adverts' and 'non-chess' but decided that this was probably the best place. Anyway, in the absence for a month or so of serious chess I have decided to be more active and have signed up to walk 47 miles in 24 hours for charity. The charity is the Community Sports foundat...

Re: Not paying the entry fee

Oh dear, as Stewart has already answered your ridiculous question, I'll save him the energy it would waste to provide the reasons. If you were serious, you were a charlatan. If you were joking, you were wasting everybodys time. However, if that isn't clear enough, imagine if the arbiter had announce...

Re: 4NCL Division Four (South)

I think the Div 4 format may need to be altered next year. I think springing that on the Division 4 teams which didn't make the top 16 with no prior notice would be a little unfair. Even if a limitation like that was desirable (which would need careful consideration), something like that would need...

Re: Division 1

We (Barbican) play ECC every now and then. We look more likely to take our place this year than in most recent seasons. I share Richard's doubts about Guildford and Wood Green, though. For interest, why is that? Is it the expense, the fact that some teams are simply too strong to compete with or ha...

Re: 4NCL Division Four (South)

Mike, that is true, indeed. What I meant would have been for any changes to be made next year to be implemented the year after next! I do agree that it would be difficult though.

Re: 4NCL Division Four (South)

I think the Div 4 format may need to be altered next year. The final weekend was a bit of a farce with everyone at the top having already played each other, three derbies on Sunday, and a match on the final day where we scored 4.5 but didn't win the match! It was clear that there were a lot of defau...

Re: 4NCL Division Four (South)

I'm told that for the final day there is a triangular match...in one day? How on earth does this work as of the three teams there will be no one team to get a six game match with?!

Re: Division Three South (2015-16)

Thank you, Paul; much appreciated. Good luck next season; hopefully we won't be crossing over but reuniting In Div 2 afterwards!

Re: 4NCL 2016-17 arrangements

In the coming months one of my tasks will be to draft negotiation scenarios for my classes next semester; I am sorely tempted to do an in depth interview with Mike about the various points and thus create a beautiful case study with lessons in long term interests over short term, flexibility, commer...

Re: 4NCL 2016-17 arrangements

My understanding from the e-mails is that hotels aren't prepared to take on the risk of allowing the NCL to guarantee the block. Given the history of the competition which, in my experience, has reflected higher demand than supply for available rooms, this demonstrates a remarkable lack of judgement...

Re: Division Two 2015-16

Ironically I'm spending more time considering the relegation implications of Division 2 than of either of the Divisions that I actually have teams participating in given that the number of promotion places available from Division 4 is dependent on the geographic preferences of the teams relegated fr...

Re: Division Three South (2015-16)

Very kind, Paul, but as with everything else in this league, I delegate recruitment elsewhere. Unfortunately my chief scout has just decided to shoot off to the Middle East for a couple of years; I can only hope that he scouts us a sponsor out there... Your point is correct though; we came up by def...

Re: Division Three South (2015-16)

In eleven years, this is the closest we have ever come to achieving...anything, Joey. We may not be pretenders but in winning terms we certainly are novices and practisers, so why don't we make sure practice translates into team results in rounds 9. 10, and 11 before counting our chickens?

Re: Division Three South (2015-16)

Loz, it sounded like an excellent match between our teams; congratulations on a well fought draw. Good luck in the promotion pool, albeit not from an ideal start. Glad that the team that finished second in the group didn't start on 0! Congratulations to both West Is Best teams; firsts in a very stro...
