Yes, a decent chap, though we never played and only had a couple of brief conversations, Tim was one of those who I missed after quitting chess.
A good egg, and I'm sad to learn he's died.

Re: Giving Queens
A spectator sitting nearby with pen & scoresheet, might also be seen as hinting that the 5-Minute Rule allows a player to stop recording?

Re: Keith Escott
I remember Dave Fox: an excellent chap
Often wonder how he got on after "Chess" stopped trading - was out of the circuit between 1983 & 2015

Re: Keith Escott
Very early '80s, I was paired against Keith in an individual tourney. Our mid-winter game was to be played at his bedsit in Sutton Coldfield, where he sat with his back to the fire whilst I froze my threepenny bits off. Surprised, on briefly returning to the sport in 2015, that he seemed largely unc...

Re: Derek Northage
For the short time I played at Kidsgrove, Derek was one of the pleasures to see.
As dangerous as he was delightful, a charming quietly well-mannered, well-liked gent.
Always sad to hear such good eggs no longer exist, but I have only cheery memories of him.

Hats off to Roger for posting this. Please give a thought to those who feel the need for a concealed phone I've no expertise in identifying those who might be suffering or causing such oppression, but let's stand up to controlling bullies in all their manifestations. Re: Arbiter question
Spotting a flag fall is either the player's responsibility or the arbiter's.
Spectators are not participants (even in team events when there's likely no arbiter in attendance0.
Grrr with a capital G to the interfering spectator.

Re: Mark Whitehead RIP
Mark Whitehead, one of the finest people on the congress circuit. I have only good memories of our many long chats and reciprocal micky-taking. He was first to tell me one list of entrants that placed a T at the end of my surname instead of an R. Thereafter, we always greeted each other as "Mr" as h...

Re: Les Hall
Saddened and angered to read this when I peeked at https://www.northstaffschess.com/ last night. Saddened: Les was one of the first friends I made when returning to chess (albeit only for a few years) in 2015. We met at Bolton in April that year and quickly established a great rapport. He wasted no ...
