An online search shows the total prize money of the 1978 All England Tennis Championships was just over £279,000 and £125,000 for the Open Golf Championship.

Very sad news - remember Patrick well from EACU county matches at Newmarket and played him several times in county and tournament games. Did a lot for chess and he'll be much missed. RIP Patrick.

Very sorry to hear the sad news of Ian's passing, I knew him from Civil Service chess and enjoyed chatting with him when I saw him. He was a really friendly guy and we had some good games.

It's worth noting David Howell is now rated 1 in England based on the live ratings and Luke McShane is rapidly rising with a live rating of 2684. David is certainly playing really well; just as a matter of interest, who was the last player to be rated 1 in England apart from Mickey and Nigel? Guess...

GM Botvinnik 1 - 0 IM Golombek
GM Keres 1 - 0 Penrose
GM Bronstein 1 - 0 IM Wade
GM Geller 1 - 0 Phillips

I think these were the only times England lost 4-0.
