Re: Quit Stallin'

It's a lot longer than that since I was a congress regular, but it seems that, in general, congresses are smaller. Also, declining numbers of players means a smaller market, plus online purchasing.

Re: Anne Sunnucks/Mothersill (1927-2014)

Thanks John - that would be the house I remember playing at, although the address was no 28 - I have an old BMS score book and some score sheets, which have details about venue for hire etc. I doubt whether the outdoor chess set is still there- according to rightmove no 28 is now flats. It was defin...

Re: Anne Sunnucks/Mothersill (1927-2014)

She a had quite a large house in Sandhurst/Crowthorne, which was host to Berkshire county matches on more than one occasion, probably in the late 1970s. I think there were books and equipment for sale, which might be the shop John refers to. Very sad that ex-players can get cut off from the chess co...

Re: 4 round FIDE weekenders?

Having not played a weekend congress for many years, the two things which might get me interested again would be avoiding 3 games in one day and avoiding Friday afternoon/night travel, both of which cannot be done at present, apart from at bank holiday and longer events. The downsides would be the l...

Re: Vladimir Kramnik Announces Retirement

Very sad day. Always an inspirational player to me, and very principled, for example in his work to reunite the different world championships.

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

I am sure you are right.
The irony is that it used to be that the British Champion would get an invitation to play at Hastings.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Back at the board, Carlsen has played an unusual looking 9Bg5 in an English Opening, and Caruana is having a long think. Edge of the seat stuff.

Re: Ian Wells memories

I was just about to say that I will dig out a game I played against Ian in 1981, but I see that it is already on John's database. It goes to show how many game from back then - not so much today - never got published. There are some great games in that database, not published elsewhere - keep up the...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

24 games would be better, but the players might get a bit fed up, apart from the expense. Maybe we need a world championship like the 1948 tournament? I'm wondering if the Candidates Tournament format should actually be the World Championship format. That seems to generate what we want in terms of ...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

It sounds like a waste of £70 to me. I saw nothing on the official site, or the Ticketmaster site, to say that the £70 price would not get you access to the playing hall for the entire game - small print on the ticket itself does not wash, since you don't see that until you have stumped up the money...

Re: world championship schedule

Is it possible to turn up on the day 9th & buy a ticket at the door? I have no idea when my Friday meeting will finish (1-2 pm) & the venue is about the same time travelling from my meeting to home. I looked at the TicketMaster website today and there were no tickets available for rounds 1-8, apart...

Re: Altibox Norway 2019 - the future of chess?

Interesting idea. Had to check it's not April 1st. Presumably a coincidence that this would favour Carlsen. It could also favour weaker players, who might be able to take a draw with white in order to randomise the result in the Armageddon game. The article compares chess to tennis, but I don't thin...

Re: Is a mutual flag fall a draw?

With manual clocks at least, I thought you had to claim the win on time if your opponents flag falls, before you make your next move. If you make a move you lose that right. Therefore if you then make a move and your flag falls your opponent can claim the win on time, despite the fact that both flag...
