Re: Team Board Orders & Grades

Oh, how I miss playing in the Surrey League! The imposition in general of grading numbers as a strict indication of playing strength was inevitable, given the number of "jobsworths" (Andrew Z) in chess, and the need for rules for everything, but it does prevent the development of improving players, ...

Re: Tradewise Gibraltar Festival 2018

Indeed. By 'this sort of thing' I meant players being allowed to take a bye at, presumably, short notice. If the bye is requested before the tournament, or has been granted for other reasons, that is a different matter. By 'this level', I was referring to players who are clearly professional, or com...

We might have expected to see Wang Hao facing Nakamura in this round, but he's taking the day off.
Does anyone else think that (allowing) this sort of thing feels wrong at this level?

Nice to see the French Winawer get an outing at this level (Giri-Carlsen) - I suppose we should not be surprised with anything Carlsen plays.

Re: Lightning Chess

I have not played in a 10 second tournament since the old Berks & Bucks congress with Alex N's loop tape. I guess more common nowadays is 5 minutes, or some version with increments. The trouble with 10 seconds per move is that it can seem incredibly slow, especially in the opening and for obvious mo...

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

...where does the responsibility for outreach lie? I don't see that any group has responsibility. I would say that senior schools are the most likely to bring players to a level of interest such that they would consider joining a chess club, but, as has often been noted on here, senior schools ches...

Re: John Toothill (1938-2017)

John and I were playing our fortieth game against each other in the internal club competition on Tuesday 21st when he took ill. Not surprisingly he was winning, having cannily, played as white a line I had told him recently I struggled against! I offered him a draw in the ambulance, but naturally h...

Re: London Chess Classic 2017

Is this really the first thread on the event, about to start today? Have we forumites become so spoilt that we hardly notice it anymore? (If we represent the English community in any way, then AGON might regret the choice of London for Carlsen's title defence after all). There is also the English K...

There is obviously an inner plane-spotter in all chess players! One of my boyhood hobbies, I have to admit, but more tri-stars at Heathrow than skyvans at Guernsey.

Re: Who may J'adoube ?

.. I would imagine he would be met with staunch resistance by the piecexit player who would complain most bitterly that the piece being 48% on one square is grounds to restart the entire game. Very good! If the rook on f4.52 were a pawn in a race in a blitz finish it would most likely arrive on f6 ...

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

The biggest day of the eevnt in many ways, then. Certainly we can be excused for switching off during the relatively unimportant final, as the players themselves might do. Predictions for today? (Aronian and So for me). I have to agree - it feels more like a qualifier for the Candidates than an eve...

And white, because he still has the move, not having pressed the clock.
Whether he adjusts it to f4 or f5 would depend on whether he were a remainer or a brexiter.

Re: SCCU 125th Anniversary Match - Saturday 16th September 2017

Many thanks to all of the organizers for putting on a very interesting match, the like of which most of us will not have played in before, and for the excellent venue and catering, and lastly to my opponent, for not taking advantage of my over-optimistic play and ultimately incorrect sacrifice!

Yes, agreed. Around 130 players at the last count, should be a good match.
