Re: Times cryptic chess clue

From today's Telegraph crossword: Participants in chess game in central London area (13) This was a 'down' clue which I didn't solve until I got the first letter from one of the 'across' clues. As ever, solvers are expected to have a knowledge of London wherever they live (I happen to live in London)

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

I'm not related to Jeremy but a customs officer at San Francisco Airport did ask, tongue in cheek, whether I was related to Inspector Morse. It was a pleasant surprise to find some evidence of humour in an American customs officer after the rudeness which I and probably most people have encountered ...

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

From today's Telegraph crossword: Line taken by bishop when villain invades land taken back (8) A bit convoluted, this one. My wife, who taught me how to do cryptic crosswords and is still better than me, found this clue a tough one to work out. The first letter was 'unchecked', I.e. it didn't inter...

Re: Media comments on chess

The latest 'Political Thinking with Nick Robinson' features an interview with Rachel Reeves: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09wwt3r The first 5 or 6 minutes centres on her chess career. It is being shown on the BBC News television channel as I write so it is probably on BBC iPlayer as well as BBC...

The "Queen's Gambit" director delivered 'the worst acceptance speech in history': https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/features/emmy-awards-2021-scott-frank-b1923241.html On a non-chess topic Gillian Anderson, who played Margaret Thatcher in "The Crown", was asked a question by a repo...

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

A rather easier one from today's Telegraph:

Perhaps corner rook or knight? (3,5)

I hasten to add that I am a Guardian reader who gets the Telegraph crossword online - I love the Matt cartoon as well but otherwise I am not a fan of the newspaper and its political views!

Re: Media comments on chess

It's a quote from 'The Sirens of Titans' by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. athough i knew it first from the song, inspired by the novel, by Al Stewart.

It seems a particularly appropriate quote for chess players!

The black king is on his side, in the 'resignation position', just in front of the board, something that is not so clear in the Internet version of the photograph.

Re: Media comments on chess

There's a photograph of the Danish football coach sitting at a chess board, in this article from 'The Guardian'. He's just won the game! The photo is rather more prominent in the article in the printed edition of the newspaper: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jun/25/hes-become-a-friend-how...
