Re: Syd Kalinsky
Sad news. I liked Syd without actually knowing him. I know he helped and gave accountancy work to my friend Richard O'Brien if Richard was ever in need of work. One anecdote involving Syd was that my team Slough, were playing his team ( I think Ilford or maybe Cavendish) in the National Club Competi...

Re: Wolfgang Uhlmann (1935-2020)
Andrew - just to be picky, the Cozens book was entitled Tal since 1960. But the real reason for posting was to say how lucky you were to have this and the Gligoric book as your first two books. I reckon a lot of people got some right old tripe as their first chess book. Yes John, I agree. My half-b...

Re: Wolfgang Uhlmann (1935-2020)
You are probably right David, as you were there as well. Re: Wolfgang Uhlmann (1935-2020)

I was the games imputer, and Uhlmann had absolutely appalling handwriting that made parts of his score-sheets almost indecipherable, and one move in particular, wasn't obvious, even ...

Re: Kevin Hawkins
Very sad news and a big loss to Bourne End Chess Club. Our Club Chairman and a true stalwart always willing to help out. As a player, he specialised in complicated chess! Pawns and Pieces were often jettisoned to generate an attacking position. In comparison, he made me look like a positional player...

Re: Simon Bartlett
What shock! I can't beleive it! A regular drinking partner every time I have been to the West Country for chess tournaments since the early 1980's. An educated man who could talk to anyone and everyone about anything. He was great company. Loved his chess, loved his beer and loved Indian curries...a...
