Re: Tony Buzan

In fact it is not unknown for obituaries to be critical of their subjects, but although one of the comments above links to an obituary, none of them actually constitute one on their own. This is a thread, not an obituary nor a set of them. It discusses an individual whose life and methods engendere...

Re: Tony Buzan

The convention for obituaries is that the strongest criticism one makes is along the lines of "there is no doubt that Tony was a divisive figure, and could be given to hyperbole. His claim to have been consultant in the 1986..." What you don't do is start posting links to spats you had with the dece...

Re: Tony Buzan

Poor old Tony. He's only been dead a few days and people on here are already bad-mouthing him. What's his great crime, exactly? Writing books? Frankly, it's shameful that anyone would post such mean-spirited comments in an obituary section.

Re: Irritating habits of juniors -a brief list

Interesting comments from everyone. I should append that a few years back I played in a big tournament in the US and the behaviour of the junior players there was very different. It was a pleasure to play them. I found myself wondering whether it's a cultural thing. Incidentally, I have given some t...

Re: Irritating habits of juniors -a brief list

I'm more inclined to blame contemporary parenting styles. When I was growing up, parents were both teachers and authority figures that established rules, boundaries and modes of behaviour. These days, parents want to be their child's best friend. Criticism of a child's behaviour is seen as judgmenta...

Irritating habits of juniors -a brief list

I know they’re kids, so one has to cut them some slack, but why are so many junior players so downright bad mannered at the board? 1. Banging the clock on every move 2. Staring at you when it’s your move 3. Standing behind you in your field of vision when it’s your move. 4. Constantly sniffing inste...

Is chess a waste of time?

I appreciate that's a rather inflammatory question, but it's one that's been on my mind recently. Sure, chess is an interesting, enjoyable game, but as I get older (I'm nearly 50) I do find myself wondering whether it's really a great use of time. After all, our time here is a finite resource; how o...

The greatest minds of our time

I had to smile this morning when I read the ECF news email from Mark Jordan about Gibraltar in which he refers to the players as "some of the greatest minds of our time." With the greatest respect, Mark, I think this is taking hyperbole a little far. The greatest minds of our time are not devoting t...
