Evidently Matthew is familiar with "Yes, Minister"!
Well spotted. My memory for TV trivia (good TV trivia anyway) is better than my memory for chess moves, which tends to fail at move 3. Unless it is a preferred opening of mine in which case I can last until move 4.

Re: End of season, snapshots of gloom, part four

Not sure about the definition (source?) but for the sake of clarity am happy to say that I do not suggest that you or anyone else from your team acted unethically. I actually hold you in high regard on such things. But I think the word poaching is used a little more casually than you suggest, espec...

Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

Yes, Crowthorne were clearly the strongest team in Division 4. We expected Oxford 3 to paired with Crowthorne in Round 11, when there would most likely have been a very different outcome for us. It was a bit strange that Oxford 3, challenging for promotion, played West Is Best 3 with average rating...

Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

Maybe a possible rule would be to require every team to have a reserve which might encourage developing players locally to the venue to get involved as an extra option? In the event that reserves are not needed, then graded friendlies could be arranged for them? Watford entered the 4NCL after sever...

Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

As Roger says, the ideal is to have a core of players who can be relied on to commit to 4/5 weekends a season, a balance of players who are flexible, and preferably at least one junior with a parent who can play but doesn't expect to so that you have a reserve! How often this utopia exists is anothe...

Welsh team reports on 4NCL 2018

Good to see reports from 3 of the 4 Welsh teams at the 4NCL this year on the Welsh Chess Union website- http://www.welshchessunion.uk/4ncl-team-reports/

Okay, primarily Welsh team for West Is Best, to forestall any pedantry!

Re: Mr Barden's Guardian Article

The small needed amendments to my last two articles will be made early next week when my sub-editor (who technically has to do it) returns from his weekend break. Many thanks, Leonard. While, as it has been pointed out by some of our colleagues, it may not be a big deal, I am grateful for acknowled...

Re: Mr Barden's Guardian Article

Sigh; it seems that Leonard has neglected his research again. South Wales Dragons have not been renamed and had a one player import as the article suggest but have merged with another squad. Something he would have realised if he'd either looked at the divisions beyond the first and seen that there ...

Re: Clarification

I should say that Bridge Oversees/Guaranteed Events did a superb job, and the code system seemed to work very well. The check in time of 3.30 at Wokefield Park less so, but that is very much the hotel rather than the middle organisation.

As Christmas approaches, I have a single room going in Telford for the first weekend if anyone wants it. Msg me directly- first come first served.

Re: 2017/2018 Season

I thought the deadline for registering lists of players was 13th October and that the deadline of the 2nd November was simply to amend the list. Reading the rule again, it does seem that every team could bombard Matt et al with their full lists today although I can't help but think that this would n...

Re: 2017/2018 Season

Apparently Wokefield Park is under new management. It will be interesting to see if this changes anything for the forthcoming season. We held a Junior 4NCL weekend there this past weekend. The change in decoration is noticeable. If you're a fan of artificial plants, wood furnishing, and a general p...

Re: Does anyone have a spare twin at Talford for weekend 1?

I may have but won't know until nearer the time. Why not just tell them you want to change it? You're ahead of time and sometimes I swear they just put two twin beds together so it can probably me made multi-use!! I plan on changing my combinations several times before the deadline to lock it in!
