Re: April Council meeting 2019

Out of curiosity; if contributors to this forum had £800 to spend on grassroots chess - how would they invest it? This is a good question, which raises two strands of thought. Suppose we placed £800 in front of the Board, or even a humble member, it is not entirely evident that anybody has a partic...

Re: April Council meeting 2019

I still have not decided what I think about the proposal Tentatively, I am with Paul; in particular, the bit about Budgets based on membership fees in line with inflation every year, seem reasonable. So, on one hand the proposal of £30,000 reflects a long term increase across the last 10+ year in l...

Re: How many casual players?

In the latest Board (125th) minutes Malcolm outlined the key points from the paper and supporting note. Malcolm said that it was critical to reach out to the millions of casual players who do not currently engage with the ECF, Where does he get that count from? Is it on the same scale as the 600 mi...

Re: 2nd Warwick University Rapidplay Tournament, Saturday 16th February 2019 (ECF & FIDE rated)

"I can confirm that University student unions are the most bureaucratic and inefficient organisations I ever come into contact with. They're notoriously inflexible and unpragmatic." However, they are a shining beacon of brilliance compared with Warwick University's management... I fear I am slightl...

Re: 2nd Warwick University Rapidplay Tournament, Saturday 16th February 2019 (ECF & FIDE rated)

That seems a strange approach for a FIDE rated event. It hardly seems to encourage foreign players to take part. It's ECF policy for FIDE rated rapid events, in fact all rapid events, to surcharge the organisers for entrants, including foreign ones, who are not ECF Silver members or higher. All tha...

Re: 2nd Warwick University Rapidplay Tournament, Saturday 16th February 2019 (ECF & FIDE rated)

Just taken a look at the entry form and I noticed this "All players will need ECF silver, gold, or platinum membership. Any entrants without silver membership will be rejected." That seems a strange approach for a FIDE rated event. It hardly seems to encourage foreign players to take part. I shall ...

Re: 2nd Warwick University Rapidplay Tournament, Saturday 16th February 2019 (ECF & FIDE rated)

Last year, we had players from clubs across the country, as well as from places as far as Bulgaria, Australia and beyond! Which places beyond Australia did you get players from? "Beyond" in the broad sense of the word! :p indeed, you are correct that we did not geographically have anybody beyond au...

Re: Coventry & District Chess League CENTENARY Rapidplay, SUN 27th January 2019 (ECF & FIDE rated)

I think we didn't have enough time to do it in November/December, and February will be the Warwick University Rapidplay, and March will be the Birmingham Rapidplay, so we were constrained to January. Narrowing on the month, 4NCL dates were a constraint, as well as the well known Coventry Chess Acade...
