Re: World Youth Championships

The match description gives me a vivid recollection of a rapid game I played about 30 years ago in which my opponent took 8 minutes on the game, a very exciting game in which I had little idea what was happening. My opponent seemed to find tactic after tactic but, unlike the Southbourne game, I jus...

Re: World Youth Championships

because sometimes you need a big shift in attitudes and this is one of those times. Why do you need a big shift in attitudes? It's against the laws of over the board chess to consult external sources during the game, and always has been. I agree with previous posters though that you have to establi...

Re: World Youth Championships

This thread was pointed out to me by someone I had told about Declan Lovelock a while ago. I think my phrase was he is either the greatest natural talent in the history of chess, or... not.

Re: World Youth Championships

He obliterated me with an attack worthy of a strong grandmaster in his 6th OTB game. The key move was a knight sacrifice moving it to a square where it could simply be taken. I've played a few GMs and never seen anything like it. He thought for as much as a minute which was more than all of his oth...

Re: Finals 13 July 2019 @ Kettering

I'd be perfectly happy with any team being able to insist on a neutral venue if they specified that was the case in March, say. We're not asking for the earth, just a somewhat level playing field. Perhaps teams could be asked to indicate, when submitting their entries for the National Stages at the...

Re: Finals 13 July 2019 @ Kettering

Thank you for your detailed account of events. I have edited my earlier post. When the final venue was revealed, and a good two months before the day itself, I put in a very polite protest to the ECF that we were unlikely to be able to get a team to Kettering should we actually make it. Are you say...

Re: Finals 13 July 2019 @ Kettering

This thread seems to be confirming the internet as the go to place for thoughtless, ill-informed abuse. First some context - Plymouth (Devon's largest city) is more than 250 miles from Kettering. Even the furthest small outposts of Lancashire and Yorkshire are around the 175 mile mark, and of course...

Re: Old Chestnut

Well we have to ask ourselves what is the point in playing in a competition where the final venue is so massively and obviously unfair it is going to be impossible to get a competitive team together. Because then you'd miss out on the fun of complaining about it? Thanks for that considered remark.

Re: Old Chestnut

.. And Basingstoke is still a 5 hour round trip from Ipswich.. a long day. This brought a wry smile. Kettering is 250 miles and 5.5 hours from Plymouth on a summer Saturday. One way. As would be the trip from Bolton to Brighton... I had a idea that the semi and finals should be played like the 4ncl...

Re: Semi finals 2019

The Under 180 will consist of two matches only, provided the final takes place. In the quarter finals, Lancs and Middlesex had byes, Yorks defaulted to Warks whilst Essex beat Cornwall. In the semi finals, Middlesex and Warks defaulted to Lancs and Essex. I would have thought the number of match de...

Re: Semi finals 2019

Yorks won against Middlesex by 10.5 - 5.5 in the OPEN section...at Spondon. There were some match defaults again.. notably in the U180 section.. I guess Suffolk couldn't handle being in the Semis in both the U180 & U160 sections. Also, it could be that travel issues played a part. Traveling from Ip...

Re: Old Chestnut

I had a idea that the semi and finals should be played like the 4ncl in the open and minor section I think anything that involves overnight stays is going to act as a deterrent rather than encouragement. Trying to hold all the finals in the same place is not worth it in my opinion (especially when ...
