Re: County Chess 2018-19

I guess at least you guys know they you have every chance of winning the national final with the strength of your sides, but most of the genuine minor counties are sick of cowardly open strength teams treating it as a plate event and winning year after year - the reason it is so hard to get captain...

As Surrey won the Minor for the first time ever can we defend our title if our open team qualify for national stages but our u180S/U160S do not.?
No. The Open and Minor are mutually exclusive.

Re: County Championship Finals

2019 will indeed be the 100th time a national county Championship has been contested. The previous 99 winners are: 29 Middlesex 22 Lancashire 13 Kent 08 Yorkshire 07 Surrey 06 Cambridgeshire 04 Essex 03 Greater Manchester 03 Warwickshire 02 Oxfordshire 01 Leicestershire 01 Staffordshire The nationa...

Re: County Championship sponsorship

Finally if the ECF were by some fluke chance to come into money for this event where should it go? The entry fee is quite small but the more successful you are in the competition the more expensive it becomes. Nottinghamshire will spend anything between £200 and £500 each season merely paying for v...

Re: County Championship sponsorship

I’m not sure why “prizes” should “reinvigorate” the County Championship, which is after all an amateur competition. At the level suggested they really don’t amount to much if split amongst a winning team, and if they were at a much higher level they would possibly just increase the inequality betwe...

Re: County Championship sponsorship

Are you reaching for your chequebook yet Mr Rudd? No. Nothing you've said there indicates much return on the sponsorship income, which is what potential sponsors are looking for. What you've sold me there is advertising my firm to 1,000 people, which is nice, but not really worth £10,000 unless tho...

Re: County Championship sponsorship

Think d and e have happened in the chess columns - e many times. If a local team makes it to the final then that will get a mention at least down here. c also. a and b you'd probably need to have the competition built up first. If there is a company out there whose marketing brief is "Smart people u...

Re: County Championship sponsorship

OK let's say there are around 1000 people who take part directly in various stages the county championship, and a significantly greater number who would be aware of it. But the game as a whole is much deeper than that. I would guess well over half of the population knows the rules and has played at ...

County Championship sponsorship

Has the ECF ever tried to find a sponsor for the County Championship – which is, after all, an old and prestigious competition? I’d have thought the surest way to reinvigorate the county game at both union and national level would be to have prizes. A potential sponsor would get a pretty good reach ...

Re: Preliminary & Quarter Final Results

As for getting strong teams, average grades will probably help the bigger counties more, but at least they will have somebody to play. There might have been the fear that if you had, say, a Surrey v Somerset under 160 match based on average grade, that both teams might just under 160, but the Surre...

Re: Preliminary & Quarter Final Results

"Poor old WECU bringing up the rear again..." I would imagine WECU has the lowest population of the Unions? It'd be the population of the individual counties that matters, but maybe not as much as having someone to actually get the team together. Hampshire is in WECU with a pretty sizeable populati...

Re: County Championship Consultation

In WECU, EACU and the MCCU, the strongest team they can put out is eligible to play in the Minor. I'd be amazed if this claim was true for more than a very small number counties. You only need to look in the grading database for players who are listed as playing for their county chess associations ...

Re: County Championship Consultation

Still only need 3 weekends for this competition so again no different to the current ECF stages In terms of competing for available weekends with summer Congresses, then no different. Are you not proposing though that weekends 2 and 3 will have matches on both the Saturday and Sunday? For teams wit...

Re: Victory for the Dinosaurs

Actually I think an additional competition along the lines of the minor counties would have been a good idea, something like an Open for the big counties, Major (ave < 185?) and Minor (ave < 170?) would be worth thinking about. The latter could have second teams in it I suppose. I'd have abolished t...
