Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

Reverting to the original rationale for this thread, I have just emailed the following questions to the two candidates in the election for ECF Director of Home Chess: If you are elected as ECF Director of Home Chess, will you: 1. Restore the ECF Senior Arbiter title. 2. Revert to the previous arran...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

I am by no means ignoring Makro’s flaws, and his record in FIDE is there for everyone to see. But without the Kremlin pulling the strings, and the influence of people such as Malcolm, I am hopeful that FIDE can be reformed. In 2022, we could be looking at a better FIDE leadership - and even a clean ...

We can read the text from the link, Tim, you don't need to post it as well.
But this version is ad-free :)

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

If I may ask the question as a relative innocent in such matters, how reliable do we believe the TIME article to be? I can verify that story as accurate, as it was also reported in The Moscow Times, where Simon Shuster and I were colleagues until 2008, and in The Moscow News, where I was the editor...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

The FIDE election essentially boils to one thing: What kind of FIDE president would Dvorkovich be? Any national federation that is thinking of supporting the Dvorkovich-Short alliance in the FIDE election should read this article, and be very scared. This is what happened when the Russian Chess Fede...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

However I found much of Tim Wall's address interesting with a lot that I would support. It's worth noting that he is nominated by Malcolm Pein (curiously in his capacity of FIDE delegate rather than the senior of Director of International Chess) and a lot of Tim's ideas would tie into a paper Malco...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

Yes, longer tournaments (7 or 9 rounds) was what I had mind. The 2019 Northumbria Masters (16-20 February) will be closer to this goal, as there are no minimum rating requirements this time. It’s specifically aimed at providing opportunities for juniors & adding an international tournament in the no...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

In your article about tournament structures, you were outspoken in a) your dislike of graded limited sections and in b) support of more financial support for professional players at the expense of amateur players. Do you have any proposals to attempt to enact these changes? Hi Nick, I had a feeling...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

Tim, if you are taking questions - do you have an idea of the budget and team you would need over a 3 year term? The outgoing Home Director often lamented he had insufficient resources, particularly volunteers, available. It sounds like you are planning to keep doing everything he was, and do more ...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

I like the references in a couple of the published manifestos to 'sharing best practice'. Although clubs are autonomous, and very diverse it is often difficult to think creatively about how to run a club, let alone have the energy to do so. I think therefore that this sharing and promulgating of id...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

Hi everyone, lots of excellent questions - which I hope to answer satisfactorily in the morning! Until then: Just got back from a very enjoyable (!) Forest Hall Chess Club AGM (and drinks afterwards). We had 20 members present, lots of interesting discussions and new volunteers for various posts. My...

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

Hi Ben, I don't think there's any magic wand we can wave to make our chess clubs more ethnically diverse overnight, or to get more women, young people and LGBT folks involved. But the main point is just to try. If we make a conscious effort to reach out to people who don't normally come to chess clu...

I would be very happy to answer questions about how we're going to develop chess, too. It doesn't just have to be procedural matters :)

Re: Election Addresses for 2018 AGM

Hi everyone! I was advised by the ECF Office that I was welcome to publish an election address on the ECF Forum, as other candidates for ECF posts have done previously. Apparently the official notification of who the candidates are only happens when the agenda for the AGM is sent out. That is schedu...
