Re: ECF Director wants to scrap Clarke grading system

@ Roger de Coverly I don't see the problem myself. Depending how confident you want to be someone may have to have a three digit grade 16 points higher than someone else before you can definitely say that they are a better player. I suspect players who had grades under the system appreciated that, t...

Re: ECF Director wants to scrap Clarke grading system

@ Christopher Kreuzer I used to have a couple of old BCF yearbooks from the 1960s (?) I understand that the BCF published grades for 1A to 3B as follows:- 1A 241 - 248 1B 233 - 240 2A 225 - 232 2B 217 - 224 3A 209 - 216 3B 201 - 208 N.B. For the avoidance of any doubt they published the 1A etc. not ...

Re: ECF Director wants to scrap Clarke grading system

I haven't read all of this thread - I haven't got the time - but if it was up to me I would go back to the old system of 1A,1B,2A etc. People attach far too much significance to grades and think they are far more accurate than they actually are. I agree with Stewart Reuben for once that the extra di...

Question about online chess resources

Hi Does anyone know if there is anywhere online where you can input a position and get a program's assessment / analysis of the position in a similar way to endgame tablebases? Obviously the stronger the program the better. I am aware there are numerous free programs which you can download but I don...

Re: British Isles Coordinating Committee

I'm sure I read somewhere that Chess Scotland and the WCU want a meeting of the BICC but it hasn't happened yet. One issue, partly prompted by Matthew Turner's switch from ENG to SCO, is eligibility requirements e.g. is a grandparent enough to be eligible, given there is no such thing as English, Sc...

Re: GM Killers

Discounting online, blitz and rapid I think I manage 5, but given I must have a combined score of -50 against Keith & Mark the wins when they overpressed were more relief than anything to celebrate. I was probably lost in the Paignton game and worse in the Benasque one so I don't think any will be ...

Go back to the official site - they have given up on chessbomb and have replaced it with a game viewer

A draw tomorrow also takes his rating over 2400?

Re: 2013 British Chess Championships (Torquay)

So is Howell-Jones so far an exact rerun of Gordon-Palliser? I can't be bothered to check, but it has very familiar contours. I'm not sure why Black plays this stuff. White just looks a bit better to me. First 35 half-moves the same, allowing for transposition of White's first two moves. Palliser p...

Re: County teams 2013-4

Mick,

That may have been true in the past and by custom but I can't see anything in the rules on the ECF website to prevent a union running a qualifying competition specifically for its Minor Counties nominations and getting another nomination.

Re: County teams 2013-4

Alex, I agree with that, but the MCCU have 2 places automatically for the Open regardless of the qualifying competition, whereas the third place used to depend on having a qualifying competition That's not quite right. The MCCU runs its Division 1 and Division 2 to Open rules, meaning that in 2012/...

Re: ECF Annual General Meeting 13 October 2012

That's not a surprise given my proposal of the 'toothless tiger' motion but what did surprise me is that the other dissenter was the newly elected Gold member rep. Given that e2e4 events are nearly all FIDE rated (so mainly Gold members playing) and seem to be well received by the players I was sur...

Re: Late payment fee for membership?

I don't know.

My local league has decided not to bother becoming a MO. (For completeness it has decided that no-one can play more than 3 games without being an ECF member.)
