For example if this clears up quicker than we think and all restrictions are lifted by the end of may you have a big gap there in the chess calendar. No british, no scottish. There's room there for a ...

I liked both Sins and Zebras, but then again, for all their faults, they had a lot that was interesting and instructive to say about chess. Take that element out, though, and what's left?
isn't that element enough?

given that most books (not just chess books) are cliched efforts.

Re: The Moves That Matter by Jonathan Rowson

not familiar with this book but I've read some of Rowson's previous books like seven deadly sins. There's no doubt that he makes interesting observations about chess and he thinks quite deeply about the game. And that's all you have to really do, isn't it really, make insights that get people thinki...

Re: Worrying times

Even when this is over, can't see chess tournaments being popular for a long time. Think they will suffer massively and some well-established tournaments will go to the wall. Many professional players will end up quitting the game altogether. Who will want to sit opposite someone and be in a room wi...

Re: Worrying times

I read somewhere last night that you are perhaps more likely to get coronavirus from lots of small contacts with asymptomatic people, in say a confined area like a bar, than you are from a more prolonged contact with someone who is clearly showing symptoms so that one fact might put people off large...

Re: Worrying times

I've had worse rejections lol. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ this is the most depressing and frightening thing I've come across- a monster that is rising exponentially. italy has lost a lot of people but there are countries like the US with far bigger populations- if it takes off there ...

Re: Worrying times

We'll only know what the true death rate is when they instigate mass testing, of millions or more. until then anything is speculation, although most of the evidence we have suggests it's nothing like 10 percent. I think that's the problem with the virus- people don't really know where they stand. th...

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8148529/Coronavirus-infected-half-British-population-say-Oxford-University-experts.html Daily mail seems to back up some of the theories put on here. (but of course it's the daily mail) Not sure I believe in this, but let's hope it's correct. Only more testin...

This Giri though also disappointing. Every time he gets a great position, seems to blow it.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

Annoyed didn't go for a Nepo win today as that was my gut instinct. But my pre tournament analysis working out well so far: "All this stuff can't be ideal for Ding and Wang Hao. Can't be ideal preparation. Plus they have a lot of pressure as it is. Don't like Caruana either. Think he'll "bounce" aft...
