Corona continues to have an effect on the candidates, and the tournament hasn't even begun yet.

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

144 deaths in italy in the last 24 hours. surely the next 4ncl and other tournaments with a large collection of people have to be cancelled?

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

My personal feeling is that Radjabov might regret this further down the line. A lot of things in life are risky, and there's no guarantee he'll get more shots at the candidates. players like Aronian, Karjakin and Anand have missed out this time, and MVL only got in because Radjabov himself withdrew....

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

Reykjavik Open was cancelled tonight. Update: Sharjah & Grenke gone as well. The question I'm now asking myself, having had my April tournament, and holiday, cancelled, is how long I should wait before entering something else. I don't want the same thing to happen again. Without being rude I think ...

Re: Coronavirus leading to cancellation?

Apparently during the outbreak, there is a three week window where 50 percent of those who get it will get it, and a longer nine week window where 95 percent of people who get it will get it (this time around anyway.) so presumably if that happens a lot more tournaments will be cancelled during that...

Re: coronavirus leading to cancellation?

I think you only need to see the state of the toilets at some chess events to get a feel for the level of hygiene.

Re: coronavirus leading to cancellation?

You can get the virus from anyone. Whether they are chinese or not is irrelevant, and posting such views just fuels ignorance and prejudice. there have already been a number of attacks against Asian people because of this virus leading to paranoia.

Re: coronavirus leading to cancellation?

these comments about sitting next to chinese people are ridiculous btw. said poster should know better, it's not the 19th century.

Wonder if the 4ncl will eventually be cancelled, and the chess olympiad and so on? hope not but if this develops you'd think they'd be at risk.

There is some speculation that Mickey Adams is on Fabi's team, since he was seen in the background of an online event he was streaming.
If this is what was seen I'm not sure it was Mickey Adams.
If that isn't Adams then it's the greatest doppleganger in history.

Re: Candidates Tournament 2020

All this stuff can't be ideal for Ding and Wang Hao. Can't be ideal preparation. Plus they have a lot of pressure as it is.

Don't like Caruana either. Think he'll "bounce" after a big performance in Wijk.

I sense an upset quite strongly here. Giri, Nepo, Gris. One of those three will win.

Re: The difference between extrovert and introvert chess players.

Yeah it's just terminology, invented by people like Jung and Freud (and like a lot of their theories, probably doesn't have much scientific basis.) I think it's pretty obvious though that some people are shy and awkward and that seems to come out in their chess, while the same could be said of outgo...

Re: The difference between extrovert and introvert chess players.

I think Morphy was an introvert. Although he played like an extrovert.

Steinitz I would have had down as an extrovert personally. Same with Keres.

Re: The difference between extrovert and introvert chess players.

Spassky a definite extrovert. Not so sure about Carlsen he seems to fit in between both stools. Lalic and Petrosian pessimistic yes.
