Wasn't Karpov said to have an aversion to washing his hair during a match?
When working in London in the 1990's I remember having a discussion about this a "chess café" in Covent Garden.
It was compared to the likes of footballers pre match rituals, & Björn Borg not shaving during tournament's.

Re: Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021

I have written to the organisers as this would be top of my list for 2021! They do an interesting event, which is all play all sections of 4 players, so you just play one game a day for three days. 500 players usually take part in that event alone! I have also emailed the organisers. Will keep peop...

Re: Membership Renewal

Have the ECF given any indication of how many members are renewing? The website does seem a little temperamental, & any reference to last years membership (2019-2020) is not there. I believe the ECF inputted some memberships manually last year. Nobody know yet because of Covid, no one has the answe...

Re: Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021

My suspicion is that it may go ahead but with a more restricted number allowed to enter than usual. Have played in the amateur sections several times, I don't think the venue will be struggling to accommodate anything more than the Master's & Challenger's. The website has not been updated for some ...

Is this being played in January 2021?

Re: Cheating in chess

Is there any evidence of junior players who have been caught cheating, having 3rd party assistance from other individuals (friends, family etc.)?

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Malta Open 2020 did you stay at the venue Tim? Yep, all three times. Good value, in my opinion, if a little 'British', if you get my drift. Played a couple of times. Well organised & no major language difficulties. When I contacted the organiser he implied that a final decision to run the tournamen...

Re: Cheating; Holowczak's Chess Article

And to that end I thoroughly welcome a pruning out of the online cheats who dotted through the Junior 4NCL, Adult 4NCL, 4NCL Congress and into the Glorney Gilbert International Online. The more those players are excluded, the cleaner and more honest the future events will run. I presume the other p...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

I don't know any due to take place in 2021 to yet been formally cancelled. Hastings is scheduled to make a decision later this month. I can imagine that organisers of potential Congresses in 2021 may hold back on designing and publishing entry forms. Given that stores seem to start their pre-Christ...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

Clubs & Leagues Anybody have any information on chess clubs that may be reopening, or OTB leagues restarting in the near future? Congresses These seem to be being cancelled (Leyland & Scarborough being the latest that I regularly enter), & will be very surprised if there is an OTB Chess Congress in...

Re: July 2020 grades

I have noticed that now the July 2020 grades have been published
the Blackpool Chess Conference 2020 games appear not to have been graded

Are they likely to be included when the August 2020 list is published?

Re: Membership Renewal

In case any forum readers are unclear, all ECF members who paid their membership by Direct Debit last year need take no action should they wish to pay by Direct Debit in 2020-2021 and remain members at the same level. We hope to put the 2020-2021 memberships on sale shortly, and current members wil...
