Re: Mark Taimanov (1926-2016)

I hear Tiger Hillarp-Persson plays fine piano. And last week I was presented with a copy of a book in Spanish - ´Entre la EMOCIÓN y el TALENTO´ , by Antonío Igelsias Martin. The subject was chessplayer and pianist, Erwin Nievergelt. GM Soffer, whom I defeated in a wildly fantastical game a few years...

Astonishing result!

btw, I see that in Winter´s Wikipedia entry they write he was the only ex-British chess champion to have served time in jail.

But, if they ever collar Brian Eley...

Mystery Scot Champion

Does anyone have an explanation for how a Scottish guy from Elgin won the 1946 British Championship in Nottingham? Robert Combe won a 12 player all play all, ahead of C H O´D Alexander, Abrahams, Milner-Barry, Winter, Golombek and Wade. Wade actually finishing last! And then he disappeared into the ...

Re: Plaskett and Woffinden's book on the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Fraud

Señor Benjamin: here´s a review of our book (by someone who actually read it first) . It contains some inaccuracies: we NEVER claimed Diana called four pagers on the eve of her husband´s taking the chair on the second evening. Weaver does accept the accuracy of many of our criticisms but, neverthele...

re Andrew Martin´s link to the Impala Publications[ /b] book and Keene´s attempts to fathom that screed - Keene told me , I believe in the late 1980s, that a guy had paid him 75,000 Pounds for the rights to make a board game out of this mysterious business. Keene accepted, and commented that this wa...

Re: Would you like to become a millionaire?

Here´s a chess question, echoed two weeks later on the German show - https://en.chessbase.com/post/who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire-part-two ´Nigel Short´ was once the answer to an early question on the UK show, too. Parfitt and Rossi from Status Quo actually got WRONG their first question - " How many...

Re: Plaskett and Woffinden's book on the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Fraud

Without addressing my explanation of why the guy changed his mind at 32K, nor accepting the analysis of Europe´s leading authority on coughs, Professor Alyn Morice, that the tapes unquestionably show two people coughing. Nor answering my other main point about the triviality of pulling this off just...

Re: Would you like to become a millionaire?

Andrew Ledger (whose uncle taught me Geography) has two GM norms.
But family life and a good job in the Civil Service in Sheffield mean, sadly, that it is unlikely he´ll make the necessary third.
