Re: UnRated Players in Rated Competitions?

I'd like to suggest that access to the Master List is via an authenticated login to the normal ECF rating database.

This is only a hope compared with reality.

Re: UnRated Players in Rated Competitions?

Whilst a person is unrated (or unknown to the organisers) I would suggest that the organisers err on the side of caution. I mean by this that the player is required to enter a higher rated section than they initially request. If you believe in the ECF rating system then that person will achieve some...

Re: Chess on TV

Charles, A large number of persons have worked very hard for some years to enable chess to be recognised as a sport. I find it rather annoying that you officially represent chess to some extent and yet you are saying the opposite. This is a democracy and you are entitled to an opinion but you might ...

Re: ELO vs ECF

FREE is a dirty word! I've spent at least 100 hrs of development time so far and its been running in anger for two years for two different leagues. I'm doing a major rewrite of the underlying code to make it marketable. Not sure if to obfuscate the code yet : hopefully its been written such that won...

Re: ELO vs ECF

Via the League Management web application (that I am currently developing) I hope to demonstrate that it is technically feasible to drip feed results from ganes / matches / tournaments / congresses /whatever as soon as they are confirmed by both captains as being correct. After all, the rating offic...

Re: ELO vs ECF

Oh dear! a raw nerve has been touched!

"ECF Council decided that the ECF didn't want standard play lists more than once a year."

Maybe the membership does? Who is the customer? Who cares?

Let's continue to stick our heads in the sand.

Re: ELO vs ECF

I'd suggest: 1. First task would be to deal with the alleged rating deflation and produce a clean set of ratings. 2. Implement the most reliable version of the rating calculator. 3. Ask /tell players who already have an FIDE Elo if the ECF can tandem their existent FIDE Elo into the ECF system. 4. D...

Re: ELO vs ECF

Andrews' views are clearly and eruditely put. I too, find that the ECF is still defying the ( spirit at least ) FIDE Laws of Chess by continuing to rate games decided by adjudication thus : 1.1 The game of chess is played between two opponents who move their pieces alternately on a square board call...

UnRated Players in Rated Competitions?

Two years ago in an u-180 County match I played an unrated player. From his board position he was allegedly 130 - 140. His rating next season was 180+. He was not a junior. In general, how do people feel about unrated players playing in rating limited competitions? An oxymoron of some kind seems to ...

Re: Chess on TV

Having watched the various late night poker TV shows, I wonder if late night chess might be of interest? Does late night poker appeal to those who might like to take up poker but haven't yet? Maybe Stewart Rueben could comment authoritatively on this? Provided it was tightly edited and presented (a ...

Re: ECF Accredited Coaches

Charles, What do you see as the roles and responsibilities of a coach when the coach has a low ECF rating (~100) ? (Obviously, (before I get flame grilled) a coach with a high rating could be useless and vice versa.... :? ) The ECF coaching web site (http://www.ecfcoaching.org.uk/) list coaches whos...

Re: Ungraded Tournaments

At the very least the ECF should update the standardplay ratings every three months. There will be issues to overcome but the rewards will outweigh the pains. There is stark difference between the publicly stated opinions of ECF officials and their personally held ones : an example of this is the no...

Re: Ungraded Tournaments

There are various informal rating systems around the country but since the ECF does not work with them they are for amusement value only.

The correct solution is this : ECF adopts FIDE system and updates every three months. Job done. Easier said than done etc etc.

This would not be a problem since when adjournments no longer are rated then players will not be willing to play such games.

I can't imagine half way through a game players will force the game to be adjourned to avoid having it rated.
